Free Music Notes for Alison Krauss & Union Station - LiveFree Music Review: Beautiful Hit: 5 Stars
Shame on me. I had never listened to Alison Krauss before buying this CD, but being a growing fan of soulful female folksy vocalists (Gillian Welch, Indigo Girls, etc.), I got this CD on the strength of its reviews.
I was truly amazed; this CD is astonishing, and exudes such exceptional musicianship, warmth, and emotion that it forces me to sit down and give it my full attention every time I listen to it.
Alison's voice is wonderful, a solid blend of pop and country, always crystal clear, always perfectly pitched. The blend of songs is extremely compelling too: from playful bluegrassy numbers to spine-chilling love songs ("New Favorite" - where you can tell it's a Gillian Welch song, but Alison really gives it extra dimension), and some great great great musical pieces. The blend of guitar, banjo, dobro and bass is so tight and crisp, it's an absolute delight to listen to.
This recording is true musical inspiration at its best. By all means get it and savor it for years to come.
Free Music Review: A MUST-HAVE Hit: 5 Stars
You've probably heard this a thousand times, but if you like bluegrass, and you liked the soundtrack to "O Brother Where Art Thou," you MUST pick up this live double-cd. The sound quality is ultimate perfection, no annoying audience noise during the songs, the musicianship is immaculate, the melodies are beautiful, and the harmonies are utterly fantastic. The music will make your heart pound, it even may bring a tear to your eye...I kid you not. Alison Krauss' voice is angelic, and Union Station's music and harmonies just create this unbelievable wall of sound. It's truly a gorgeous cd. Some of my favorite songs on here are Choctaw Hayride, Cluck Old Hen, Everytime You Say Goodbye, and Forget About It, Stay, Take Me For Longing and A Tribute to Peador O'Donnell--outstanding dobro work. But really this whole double-cd is great and I always listen to it all the way through. It cheers me up, makes the day seem a little brighter. I'm not exaggerating here. Buy it for yourself. Buy it for your friend. Buy it for your folks.
Free Music Review: Bluegrass is back Hit: 5 Stars
Alison Krauss has taken 4 superb musicians and herself and formed possibly the best bluegrass band ever.
She has Jerry Douglass who has been called the Jimi Hendrix of the dobro.
She also has Dan Tyminski and Ron Block playing guitar and banjo respectively.
Barry Bailes is a solid gut bass player.
On this CD we hear songs from her recent album New Favorite. She does a classic remake of the old pop song Baby, now that I've found you.
Bright Sunny south is a civil war song, that I listen to over and over.
Take me for the longing is another great song from New Favorite, and the Remake Man of Constant Sorrow from Oh Brother How Art Thou, won several grammys for her.
When you say nothing at All is another monumental song on the CD.
The musicians are the best in the world, Allison Krauss has a very pure voice.
I dont listen to much country music but this CD is a treat to listen to. Jerry Douglass is in top form.
I cant wait till she comes to Las Vegas
Free Music Review: First Time Listener -- thrilled to discover this band! Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this CD after watching a part of the live show on PBS -- Alison's silky smooth vocals appealed instantly to me. Listening to the CD was something else -- it is very well recorded for a live show and all the musicians are masters of their trade. The first song "Let me touch you.." alone is worth the price of the CD! For you audiophile listeners -- this album is recorded in DSD and has an amazing soundstage and depth. I have always loved acoustic bass and this album truly brings out how much difference it can make to the overall music. I wonder why more bands don't prefer the acoustic bass.Anyway, this album is a treasure. I am sure that like myself, this should appeal to a wide cross over audience who listen to jazz, classical, blues. In this age where Brittany Spears & Justin Timberlake are considered to be musicians, it is so hard to find good music. Thanks to Alison Krauss and the Union Station for giving us something so special.
Free Music Review: Absolutely wonderful! Hit: 5 Stars
There is something wonderful about a live CD and I love AKUS, so I knew I was in for a treat when this double disc set came out. I have not been disappointed, especially since disc one and disc two are equally great!
Alison Krauss and Dan Tyminski swap lead vocal duties, when they are not leading the rest of Union Station through the rollicking instrumentals. My favorite songs are "Just Let Me Touch You For A While", "Maybe" (Krauss' voice soars), the playful "Oh Atlanta" and the borderline depressing "New Favorite". The crowd comes into play heavily - they eat up "I am a Man of Constant Sorrow". At one point a heckler yells 'more' and Dan says 'this is not a race' - showing AKUS' not often seen playful side.
For two CDs, the price is right and it is a wonderful mixture of old and new AKUS music, along with some bluegrass standards not appearing on any of their other CDs. Truly a must-have set!
