Free Music Review: This will be a favorite for a long time
Hit: 5 Stars

I first heard this album at a coffee shop I worked in. It seemed like every customer that came in while it was playing asked me about it. I bought it for myself just a few days ago. I must have listened to it 5 times since then. I just keeps getting better. The first thing I loved about it was how eclectic the music is... it sounds like bluegrass, country, and something else I can't put my finger on. Another thing I really respect about the album is that even though the music varies, the next song is never out of sync with the one before. Tonight, after listening to it again, I paid more attention to the lyrics. They seem to either tell a really good story, or else speak very personally to you and wherever you may be at the point of hearing them. Either way, the lyrics are wonderful to listen to. I feel like I'm going to develop a relationship with this album, you know the type. And I can't wait to get my second Alison Krauss cd!

Free Music Review: AKUS - My Favorite Music to Get Away From it All
Hit: 5 Stars

AKUS Live :Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Dan Tyminski, Ron Block and Barry Bales shed a ray of hope for us all in this new release. A visionary band in many ways. The driving backbeat energy of "Choctaw Hayride" reminds me of a futuristic Bluegrass train pulling me along for a wild ride. Ron's Faraway land is prophetic in its vision and simplicity. "The Boy who wouldn't Hoe Corn" makes a statement of what the Bluegrass tradition is all about and its ability to speak in many ways. "Tiny Broken Heart" is a new favorite of mine and how once again bluegrass tradition can make a statement for today's world. "Bright and Sunny South" says it all with Dan's vocal clarity in all its best. Alison's vocals on "Stay" speak directly to you as a long lost friend would. All in all, their ability to mix vision, bluegrass backbeat and energy is what makes them trully special among today's bands. Highly recommended...Five BIG stars.

Free Music Review: Just go out and buy this CD!
Hit: 5 Stars

What an incredible collection by one of the best ensembles around (bluegrass or otherwise). Alison Krauss proves once again that she is one of the finest vocalists in the world. Just listen to her rip it up on "Oh Atlanta". And the vocal harmonies on the tracks "Ghost in this House", and the beautiful "Down to the River to Pray" will send a shiver down your spine and put a tear in your eye. Just incredible.

Standout tracks include Dan Tyminski's outstanding take on the traditional "The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn" with an amazing guitar intro, and the haunting "Maybe" with one of Alison's finest performances. And thank god for Jerry Douglas, who really is the best dobro player in the world. The band is on fire on the two Douglas-penned instrumentals "Choctaw Hayride" and "We Hide & Seek". They deserve a much wider listening audience and this CD proves it. Just go get it today!

Free Music Review: One of the best EVER!
Hit: 5 Stars

This album (a collection of songs that AKUS has recorded over the years at a live concert) is easily one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time. I'm not a fan of honky-tonk country, but I found a love of bluegrass and the amazing insturmentation that goes with it when I first started listening to this group. From the first song they had me hooked. What amazes me most is that this entire album was recorded live, which just goes to show how talented they all are. The bits of audience reaction that are included do not get in the way of flow of the songs, but actually add to excitement of the songs. I loved it so much that I bought the DVD of the concert as well (also great with some documentaries). If you have other albums by AKUS or Alison Kraus, this is a must have! It has the very best of AKUS from the last 15 years.

Free Music Review: Delightful Assortment of Tunes from a Great Talent
Hit: 5 Stars

I am not exactly a fan of bluegrass music by any stretch of the means, but there are times when listening to tunes of my favorite music formats can get quite old. I first saw Alison Krauss on television when she performed a couple of selections in a recorded live production of Carolina Calling, a highly popular, local PBS program enjoyed among North Carolina viewers.

This 2-Disc set is quite enjoyable. For those, including myself, who are not into the twangy side of bluegrass but nonetheless have an appreciation for excellent instrumental performances with banjos and dobros harmonized quite well with the lovely vocals of Ms. Krauss, they will likely find the second disc to be the better half of this set.

And let me say that this performance is a classic case of how a good start can lead up to a fabulous ending.
