Free Music Notes for New FavoriteFree Music Review: on top of the mountain Hit: 5 Stars
This is a great recording. Hot on the heels of O Brother and Down From the Mountain, AK and Union Station have wisely flexed their bluegrass muscle. Their last one, "Forget About It", was about as close to a pop project I think they will ever get. They step back and let this one rip a little bit, especially when they let Jerry Douglass (Dobro) step up front. This is as clean and seasoned as country comes. Their early stuff is hard to listen to now because their sound is so much more refined and mature than before. If you like Alison Krauss or the "O Brother Where Art Thou?" soundtrack, then this is a must have.
Free Music Review: A Different Kind of Bluegrass, I really like this CD Hit: 5 Stars
My older relatives who are traditional bluegrass purists did not care for this album at all, but I like it so much that I play it over and over again and never get tired of it. Being raised on traditional old world bluegrass music, I wasn't sure I would like this collection of songs. The music & vocals are rich, soothing, easy on the ears -- delightfully different without a total departure from traditional blends. The beauty of music is in the ear of the listener. If you like what you hear in the sample sound clips you should definitely trust your instincts and buy this CD. You won't be disappointed.
Free Music Review: I can't compare it to their other work Hit: 5 Stars
but I think this CD is outstanding. To a newcomer to Alison Krauss and Union Station, as I was, I would have to say that this music on the whole is less bluesgrass than you might think and more folk and pop than you might think. Even the more uptempo and bluesgrassy sounding pieces, like track 2, don't burn fire like some other songs I have heard elsewhere but are nevertheless beautiful in their relative restraint. And, the more downtempo songs work as well as any, if not better than most, straightforward pop ballads. As a previous reviewer noted, the title track is wonderful in its restraint.
Free Music Review: Taking it Further Hit: 5 Stars
Since Allison Krauss and U.S.'s Now That I Found You first played my heartstrings like a fine fiddle, I have been a fan of this great group's sound. This album takes their talent to a new level by toning down the very sweet quality of Krauss' singing, and inserting some earthy bass sounds (with the help of the talented Dan). The material is somehow both deeper then ever yet also more lighthearted. Whistling in the dark perhaps. For someone coming from mainstream pop radio this album might be a little hard to take, but to anyone who has been following the revolution of roots music it will please.
Free Music Review: Union of Talents Hit: 5 Stars
Krauss and the Union Station boys outdo themselves on this new album. I bought it for "Lucky One," but found the true highlights of the album were "The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn" and "New Favorite" (a Gillian Welch and David Rawlings-written gem). There's nothing workman-like about this album: every song feels fine-edged and finessed. "That guy who sang for George Clooney" (Dan Tyminski) outdoes his "Oh, Brother!" performance here. This is a must for every genuine bluegrass fan, along with all the band's other albums.
