Free Music Review: Brilliant music to a brilliant film

"All That Jazz" is definitely one of my personal Top Ten movies, and lately I've put the soundtrack on a few times. I always felt it should have been the winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1979 (although Kramer vs. Kramer was pretty good, I admit...). However, it did win for Best Score, and this soundtrack shows why.

The record has some great music that is not part of the original score, especially George Benson's version of "On Broadway", a nice "Everything Old is New Again" by Peter Allen (who I normally don't care for, but this is a great song), and an excellent excerpt from a Vivaldi concerto.

But the heart of the soundtrack are the songs from the original musical numbers, mostly concentrated at the end of the movie and the soundtrack. Although the songs are mostly standards, these versions are fresh and exciting and recall the distinctive Bob Fosse choreographic treatment they all receive in the film: After You've Gone, There'll Be Some Changes Made, Who's Sorry Now, Some of These Days, and a semi-apocalyptic version of Bye, Bye Love. The original tune Take Off With Us is also pretty good, illustrating in the film the kind of effect choreography decisions can have on a musical number.

This is brilliant music from an even more brilliant film, loosely based on the craziness in Bob Fosse's life when he was editing the film "Lenny" while also directing the Broadway hit "Chicago". Highly recommended.
