Free Music Review: The best of the "metalcore" genre
Hit: 5 Stars

This album has set the bar extremely high for the so called "metalcore" genre. I really dont even consider this album to be metalcore. More like melodic death metal, with some clean singing and some chugging breakdowns thrown in. Now every other metalcore band has something to try and surpass. Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, Unearth, Agayu, Bleeding Through, As I Lay Dying, Diecast and whoever else you can think of, cant even come close to touching this album at this point. Forget those other bands, this is THE best the genre has to offer as of 2007.

No other metalcore band can touch the heartfelt and amazingly thoughtout leads and solos of Oli Herbert (with help from Mike Martin). This guy is one of the best guitarist we have in America. Forget Trivium. Forget all the other bull, his solos are actually masterpieces. Not just mindless, lets stick 1000 notes in one solo, we think were cool cause we can play fast crap. This stuff gets stuck in your head, its memorable. You'll be humming it for weeks. Not many other bands can do that to me. (some that come to mind... In Flames and Arch Enemy)

I consider Oli Herbert to be one of the smartest guitar players we have in America right now, inside the melodic death genre. Along with Jeff Loomis (Nevermore. I know they are not melodic death but if Dane growled then yea), James Malone (Arsis) and Peter Joseph + Patrick Pintavalle (The Absence). All helping keep the melodic death metal scene respectable in the United States. A place where it has been hurting for sometime now. Buy this album if you really like guitar heavy music and amazing solos.

Free Music Review: For me, one of the best of 2006
Hit: 5 Stars

This Darkened Heart was one of the best of 2004, and now The Fall Of Ideals is standing tall as one of the best releases of 2006.

They got a new drummer and he is about ten times better than the old drummer. There are blast beats, and very fast double bass. Oli is still amazing at guitar and his solos are still as great as ever. The biggest change would have to be Phil's voice. He does sing more now, but don't let that fool you. On this cd he brings in the lows. His lows give a new feeling to All That Remains.

In my opinion, I think this is much better than This Darkened Heart. Not to degrade that cd, or anything because This Darkened Heart is an amazing cd. The Fall of Ideals is faster and I think the guitar work and skills have increased a lot since their 2004 release. The first time I heard This Calling, I knew this cd would be great. Definitely get this if you liked their last cd. A lot of people have been hating on this cd because there is "too much singing". Phil has a great singing voice, and he lets you know on this cd.

The more and more I listen to this cd, the more and more I like it. Every song on the cd is amazing, but stand out tracks are Whispers (I Hear Your), Six, Become The Catalyst, and Empty Inside.

Besides Adam D. from Killswitch produced this cd. He has yet to let me down and every cd he produces turns out amazing.

Free Music Review: So metal, it is hard to categorize it as "Metalcore"
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is stunning, all the way around. Musically, you can't find a better quote, "Metalcore" band than All That Remains: the incredibly solid guitar team of Oli Herbert (whose guitar tone and style is very reminiscent of Soilwork's Peter Wichers) and Mike Martin, with their gallop-picking riffs 'a plenty, the monstrous, vomit-inducing/sickening drum work of Shannon Lucas... And then you have, undoubtedly one of the greatest metal vocalists around representing his multi-varied range, from death metal cookie monster growls, rabid screams, and over-the-top melodic singing, Mr. Brutality himself, Phil Labonte! What is amazing about this album is how catchy it is for being heavily-laden with death metal and even black metal influences abound. There are also some obvious Soilwork-like groove metal with guitar harmonies galore. This band really knows what they are doing. Perhaps it's the polished production that makes it sound so solid and good, however, I have seen videos of this band live on YouTube, and they know how to bring it. Needless to say, this is no run-of-the-mill cliche "Metalcore" band. This is a band that has re-written the book and approach of the whole Metalcore genre, and defies being pigeon-holed into Metal Sub-genre. All That Remains owns!

Free Music Review: Shadows Fall Ain't S#@T!
Hit: 5 Stars

Of course you can't really write a review without mentioning SF, (given the history of the two bands) but give me a break, I simple can't stand Brian AT ALL. Dude sounds cheap and forgettable, as do his backing vocalists that couldn't write a catchy riff if their life depended on it. SF are nothing, I stepped in a pile of Dog crap and thought of them the other day.

ALL THAT REMAINS on the other hand are far from the pile I mentioned. I find that at anygiven time of the day, I have riffs running through my head from this new release. Not to mention that production wise this is the heaviest by far, not really too much different from the last release but it is HEAVIER-(somehow.)

As a guitarist, (which is a huge part of my beef with SF - cause again they SUCK) I find All That Remains to be on the top of their game. And the material is just honest. The stories are real and true to life, but then again SF could be, but I fall asleep before they ever get to their point.

There isn't one song on this disc that I don't love, but 1 - 2 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 9 & 11 are my favs, the rest are just my second favs.

SF is a history lesson Phil and ATR are present and FUTURE.

Free Music Review: Brutal and Beautiful!
Hit: 5 Stars

I was hesitant to buy this album because it's the hardest music I've ever really bought a full cd of. After listening to The Weak Willed on their website I became hooked. I figured if I could like a song that hard on the album then I'd definitely like the whole album. The highlights of this album are the drums, guitars, and vocals. What's really going to catch your attention first are the vocals. Phil can growl, scream, screech, shout, sing, and mix up all those categories and you actually hear the different tones. One of the best singers around period. Oh, and the guitar work is [...] brilliant! There's the anthemic power metal feel here mixed with some grinding and fast heavy metal to death metal guitar work. Very fast triplets and palm mutes mixed with some beautiful note and chord selection. The whole album is 40% melody and 60% brutal hard riffs. Vocals are like 35 and 65%. The best three tracks are; This Calling, The Weak Willed, and Indictment. The only song that earns 4 stars here is Empty Inside. It just lacks the sparkle the other tracks have. Not innovative but definitely creative, great song structures with good melodic solos. Has personality, it's not just one of the crowd.
