My first thought upon hearing Allan Pettersson's Symphony No. 7 (1966-67) was "my goodness, this is grim and cheerless", as I heard a laboriously played line on low brass reiterated again and again as martial orchestral movements trod upon it. And yet, the Seventh turns out to the crowd-pleaser among Pettersson's symphonies. This Swedish composer, adopting the extended tonality of the Nordic tradition, ultimately produced 16 very serious symphonies, full of dense polyphonic lines that never find reconciliation. The Symphony No. 11 (1973) is even more "tragic", but swirls about with a comparatively enormous amount of material. It is nice that Pettersson wrote this kind of "battle music" with actual musical content, as opposed to the fluff of figures like Vasks, but it would have been nice to get some actual contrasts instead of a full disc of this (which turns out to go on for hours more in the other symphonies).
I imagine that Pettersson's work will appeal mainly to those lovers of 20th century music who like to connect the work to the trials and tribulations of a person's life. It might be for you if you like the late Schnittke because you think it sounds like being a stroke victim, Shostakovich because you hear it as a secret rebellion against Stalin, or Silvestrov because you feel he expresses some angst at the dissolution of a common musical language. For lovers of 20th century music more into abstraction--my favourite composers include Boulez, Norgard, and Lindberg--you're probably going to find this turgid and unimpressive. I still give the disc three stars, as Pettersson is a very able orchestrator, and it would probably be entertaining to see this music performed in concert (evidently modernists aren't the only ones who write Augenmusik). But before you decide to explore this composer's works in any depth, try to hear one of the symphonies first to see whether it's your cup of tea.

Allan Pettersson (1911-1980) is one of the main influences in the music of Leif Segerstam, so it makes perfect sense for Segerstam to conduct Petterrson's symphonies. Pettersson was able, in his early symphonies, to maintain at once a sense of thematic drive as well as a dark presentiment of atonal forces. Tricky, but both Pettersson and Segerstam--in his own symphonies--pull it off. The Symphony 7 (1968) contains rough moods, dark clouds, with brightness (on the flute and woodwinds) peeking in here and there throughout. The Symphony 11 (of 1974) is full of polyphonic shifts and syncopations that sweep the listener along. --Paul CookClassical Music CDs
