Mockingbird is a stupendous album by Allison Moorer; she sings these songs originally sung by other female artists with all her heart and soul. The quality of the sound is so good you'd swear she was giving you a personal concert right there in your living room; and the artwork is attractive, too.
The track set starts off with the title track, "Mockingbird." This is the only song on this CD written by Allison herself; the rest is Allison singing songs female artists before her made famous. Allison Moorer throws herself into this ballad with its lush musical arrangement. The arrangements for the guitar and the strings are particularly strong; this impresses me. The modulations between major and minor keys also enhance the natural beauty of this number. "Dancing Barefoot" has that country flavor--with just a twist of rock thrown in for effect. "Dancing Barefoot," once sung by Patti Smith, stuns me with its beauty. Allison sings this flawlessly and she never misses a note!
"I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl," first sung by the great Bessie Smith and also performed by Nina Simone, gets the royal treatment from Allison; Allison and the musicians slow down the beat to make this all the more sensual and romantic. Great! Again, the guitar and keyboard work does wonders for this number. Listen also for "Go, Leave." "Go, Leave" starts out with a fine musical flourish; and when Allison comes in this number takes flight! Allison sings passionately of how she wants her man to leave her because she knows it's for the best. "Go, Leave" stuns me with its beauty; and I predict that you will like this number.
"Daddy, Goodbye Blues," performed in the past by Ma Rainey, has a great blues effect with a dash of country thrown in to make this number memorable. Allison sounds like she's singing from inside a box on just this one number; Buddy Miller decided to replicate the old fashioned recording equipment for this tune. Nevertheless, for the most part "Daddy, Goodbye Blues," is quite strong anyway.
"Where Is My Love" starts with several bars of just the guitar; and Allison sings this very sweetly with just a guitar to accompany her. "Where Is My Love" shines all the brighter because of the simplicity of the arrangement; when the piano and strings come in it still holds its own well. Allison's excellent diction also bolsters her performance.
The CD ends very strong with a beautiful number entitled "I'm Looking For Blue Eyes." This song highlights Allison's vocals as they have been throughout this album while a man accompanies her at times; and the musical arrangement is excellent.
Overall Mockingbird is a strong, brilliant release by Allison Moorer that proves her incredible talent beyond any doubt. Allison sings so sweetly that it could break your heart; and I predict a great future for Allison. I highly recommend this album for fans of country and people who already know about Allison's gift will want this CD in their collections.

After setting the tone with her self-composed, bittersweet title track, framed by chamber strings and punctuated with a saxophone solo, she and ace producer-guitarist Buddy Miller find revelatory dimensions in material by artists ranging from Nina Simone (the sultry, torchy "I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl") to Joni Mitchell (an older-and-wiser "Both Sides Now") to June Carter Cash ("Ring of Fire," which she wrote for her husband, Johnny, and which here features a languid vocal over a rhythm loop). You?d expect Moorer to do fine by her sister Shelby Lynne ("She Knows Where She Goes"), Gillian Welch ("Revelator"), and Julie Miller ("Orphan Train"), but it?s a real surprise to hear her connecting from the inside out with Patti Smith?s hypnotic "Dancing Barefoot" or channeling the blues of Ma Rainey ("Daddy, Goodbye Blues," featuring Moorer?s husband Steve Earle).
