Free Music Review: nice surprise!

this was my very first Allison Moorer purchase. i am so glad that jumped and bought this cd. it is upbeat and a great listen. i was also pleasantly surprised by the song choices. it's fun to hear some of the oldie but goodies now and then.

Free Music Review: I'm not a "Country" fan,
Hit: 5 Stars

but this album really isn't "Country". However, Shelby Lynne's little sister has done herself proud. In this mixed bag of country, rock, folk, and blues, Allison Moorer has proven she's as good as any singer around. Why she hasn't gotten the marketing push is anybody's guess.........

We certainly do have country; the late Johnny Cash pretty much owned "Ring of Fire", and probably only a girl can get away with doing it now...the presentation has to be REALLY different. Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" is another 60s classic, but several have done it. Nina Simone was Blues royalty, and "Sugar in my Bowl" pays her full honor. "Orphan Train" and Ma Rainey's "Daddy, Goodbye Blues" certainly fit the same genre.

This is a fine album, all covers except for the title cut. As I explained in my review of Allison's sister's "Just a Little Lovin", that is Not a negative word for me. To cover Nina Simone is an honor, not a slam. Ditto the others. This is a fine record that I really enjoy...bet you will, too.

Free Music Review: Allison Moorer Makes These Songs Her Own
Hit: 4 Stars

Country singer Allison Moorer (Shelby Lynne's sister!) interprets classic songs from a number of other female artists, from a number of different genres. I was intrigued by this CD, specifically because of the artists and songs Moorer sings. Much like Cat Power, Moorer interprets these songs with her own unique style, so they don't at all sound like the originals. The CD starts out with "Mockingbird," the only original song on the CD, written by Moorer (this is not James Taylor's "Mockingbird"). This is followed by "Ring of Fire," Johnny Cash/June Carter Cash, a much slower version than what you have heard elsewhere, and includes songs by other artists such as Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, and her sister, Shelby Lynne.

I really like this CD. Moorer has a unique sound and the CD is varied enough to appeal to different audiences. My only disappointment was the time of the CD, less than 48 minutes. I wanted to hear more!

Free Music Review: Moorer delivers with this collection of inspired covers
Hit: 4 Stars

Allison Moorer has a great voice; something that I have always recognized even while being a little let down and bored with her music. But, on Mockingbird, Moorer delivers an inspired interpretation of some classic songs by fellow female artists such as June Carter Cash's "Ring of Fire", Gillian Welch's "Revelator", Nina Simone's "I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl", Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now", and Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot" (almost as good as the original!). She also picks fine tunes from Julie Miller (wife of the album's producer Buddy Miller) and her sister Shelby Lynn.

The combination of Moorer's amazing voice, a great choice of songs to cover, and some really inspired arrangement by Moorer and Miller leads to a very enjoyable, Americana-tinged cover album worthy of your time and your ears.

1 star = Not worth the blood dripping from your ears/
2 stars = Don't bother, clean your bathroom instead.
3 stars = Wasn't a waste of time, but it was time wasted.
4 stars = Good music, but not life altering.
5 stars = This music changed my world in at least some small way.
