Free Music Notes for MockingbirdFree Music Review: Loved her voice but not the songs??!! Hit: 3 StarsThere is no doubt that Allison Moorer has a pure voice with great range. My only complaint with this CD is that I did not particularly enjoy the songs Moorer chose to render in her own style. I was totally surprised to see this listed as a country album as it sounds more like the blues to me. I did enjoy the songs Mockingbird and Orphan Train. I felt that Daddy Goodbye Blues sounded a bit tinny.
I believe Allison Moorer has a great future in store for her; however, I would like to hear some original tracks. I felt she did not honor the original artists as much as she may have intended, especially with songs like Both Sides Now which I hardly recognized until the song was nearly over.
Allison shows great promise and I hope she'll consider singing some original songs and put her own mark on them!
Free Music Review: A Wonderful Sound Hit: 5 StarsAllison Moorer just got a new fan! Great voice and great "feel" to this music. She is even a COMPOSER...now that's talent. I enjoyed all the cuts on this CD. When I saw that she had attempted a rendition of "Ring of Fire" - one of my all-time favorites - I was trepidatious...until I heard it; it's as fabulous as the ballad it was meant to be! Brava! Other great cuts are; "Go, Leave" and "Daddy, Goodbye Blues" just to name a few.
I hate to compare singers - but if you are a Linda Ronstadt and/or Eva Cassidy fan, you'll love Allison Moorer.
Free Music Review: Hard to define it's niche Hit: 3 StarsAnytime an artist releases an entire CD (ecluding one song) of covers from other singers... it makes me wonder. The only song that is original on this CD is the first one, and that is the dullest song of them all. I was uninspired by it and found myself ready for the next song.
The rest of the songs are a mixture both vocally and instrumentally. I won't describe each song as others have done that far better than I ever could. However, like another reviewer stated, calling this CD a country CD is an injustice. It certainly has pieces of country in it, but I never felt that was the overwhelming genre it belonged in. I think therein lies one of this CD's problems. It's hard to define just what it is supposed to be.
Some of the songs are solid and well done, yet others seem like they came out of a teenagers bedroom. For me, it was merely a mixed bag - some good others not so much. If you are thinking about this CD take a look (and listen) to the samples to know just what you are getting.
Free Music Review: Great For A Romantic Dinner ..but not much else :( Hit: 3 StarsFirst I'll start by saying that this CD isn't "Country" as Amazon states. There may be some sounds & instruments associated with country music, you can definately hear the influence, but putting this in that category is really not doing this album any justice. The people expecting country will probably hate it, & the people that would truely appreciate this album would probably never listen to it. If I were to categorize "Mockingbird" I think I'd go with folk, or soft rock. Even those 2 titles would be stretching it as the CD is hard to put into any one category.
Now for the CD ..I didn't hate it. I was expecting to (as I'm an avid Country music basher), this one was more for my wife who likes the stuff. As it turns out I actually liked it more than she did. Allison has a great voice, & the music is dreamy all the way through. Now for the main problem with the music. It's a little too dreamy, meaning unless you're planning on going to sleep to it you probably won't get much play out of it. Every single track on the CD is really, really slow. It's a very mature sound that just doesn't really seem to go any where. I'm sure that there are listeners out there who will really appreciate this sound, it's just not for me. I wouldn't turn it off were it playing somewhere, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it though either unless I were aiming for a romantic setting in which case I can think of no better CD. This is by no means a horrible CD, I think alot of people will like it, but I think there's really only a select audience who will truely appreciate it. I would listen before you buy
Free Music Review: Very pleasantly surprised Hit: 4 StarsJudging by the cover (the soft image of a beautiful woman) and album's concept (all songs written by the women who inspired her), I must admit I went into this with pretty low expectations. I thought it would be a collection of pretty little songs, heavy on the ballads. In other words, I expected this to be sweet, but not much else. It wasn't long before I realized I was way off.
I like country music with a lot of depth and substance: Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Patty Griffin, The Jayhawks, Victoria Williams, Lucinda Williams. This fits in with the tradition of those artists wonderfully. On Mockingbird, Moorer pulls off the trick that every covers artist must: she makes the songs her own. Case in point: Ring of Fire. I've heard this song at least a thousand times - on cd, on the radio, on tv, in films. Her take on the song would hardly be considered radical, but is nevertheless a significant departure from the well-known original. And it works. She slows the song down without robbing it of its essence. And she gets similar results from the other songs.
In truth, the concept of "songs written by women" becomes irrelevant pretty quickly. The real concept here is that Moorer picked very good songs and gave them a full treatment. Like Tom Petty's covers on the She's the One soundtrack, she doesn't just sing along to a basic backing track: she and the band really throw themselves into the songs. From muscular rockers and bluesy tunes to beautiful ballads, they play everything with style.
This isn't the bland junk they play on Nashville radio. This is the real deal. Allison - I shouldn't have doubted you! You've just won yourself a new fan.
