Free Music Notes for Mockingbird

Free Music Review: Wow
Hit: 5 Stars

I actually never heard of Allison Moorer until a couple weeks ago. I got this cd and Wow! I'm so impressed. She reminds me a little of Loreena McKennitt on some songs. I'll say; the cd is slow, calming, pleasant and very different. Very nice to listen to.

Free Music Review: fine country music with added rock, folk and blues--not to mention heart and soul
Hit: 5 Stars

Mockingbird is a stupendous album by Allison Moorer; she sings these songs originally sung by other female artists with all her heart and soul. The quality of the sound is so good you'd swear she was giving you a personal concert right there in your living room; and the artwork is attractive, too.

The track set starts off with the title track, "Mockingbird." This is the only song on this CD written by Allison herself; the rest is Allison singing songs female artists before her made famous. Allison Moorer throws herself into this ballad with its lush musical arrangement. The arrangements for the guitar and the strings are particularly strong; this impresses me. The modulations between major and minor keys also enhance the natural beauty of this number. "Dancing Barefoot" has that country flavor--with just a twist of rock thrown in for effect. "Dancing Barefoot," once sung by Patti Smith, stuns me with its beauty. Allison sings this flawlessly and she never misses a note!

"I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl," first sung by the great Bessie Smith and also performed by Nina Simone, gets the royal treatment from Allison; Allison and the musicians slow down the beat to make this all the more sensual and romantic. Great! Again, the guitar and keyboard work does wonders for this number. Listen also for "Go, Leave." "Go, Leave" starts out with a fine musical flourish; and when Allison comes in this number takes flight! Allison sings passionately of how she wants her man to leave her because she knows it's for the best. "Go, Leave" stuns me with its beauty; and I predict that you will like this number.

"Daddy, Goodbye Blues," performed in the past by Ma Rainey, has a great blues effect with a dash of country thrown in to make this number memorable. Allison sounds like she's singing from inside a box on just this one number; Buddy Miller decided to replicate the old fashioned recording equipment for this tune. Nevertheless, for the most part "Daddy, Goodbye Blues," is quite strong anyway.

"Where Is My Love" starts with several bars of just the guitar; and Allison sings this very sweetly with just a guitar to accompany her. "Where Is My Love" shines all the brighter because of the simplicity of the arrangement; when the piano and strings come in it still holds its own well. Allison's excellent diction also bolsters her performance.

The CD ends very strong with a beautiful number entitled "I'm Looking For Blue Eyes." This song highlights Allison's vocals as they have been throughout this album while a man accompanies her at times; and the musical arrangement is excellent.

Overall Mockingbird is a strong, brilliant release by Allison Moorer that proves her incredible talent beyond any doubt. Allison sings so sweetly that it could break your heart; and I predict a great future for Allison. I highly recommend this album for fans of country and people who already know about Allison's gift will want this CD in their collections.

Free Music Review: Allison's Heart
Hit: 5 Stars

In the ten years since first hearing "A Soft Place to Fall" (The Horse Whisperer), I have been an avid and loyal fan of Allison Moorer's music. And in that time I have been awed by each of her consistently wonderful releases, as well as by the fact that she has yet to become a household name. On her newest release, Allison, with a single exception, applies her amazing artistry to the songs of other writers, and does so with all of the passion and purity she has devoted to her originals. Cat Power, Joni Mitchell, Gillian Welch, Patti Smith, Nina Simone, Ma Rainey as well as other great writers and performers, and we, are the benficiaries of Allison's mesmerizing gifts, and she, along with producer Buddy Miller, have proven that great songs have more than one voice. There is genuine sadness and poignancy in these performances, which could only have come from the heart of one who has known not only the joys of Love, but also experienced the pain of losing it.

Free Music Review: Her take on some classics shows true artistry!
Hit: 5 Stars

Having purchased all of Allison Moorer's previous cds on the day of release, I was excited to receive this one today via Amazon.com. While I like her original songs best, this cd is nothing short of stellar because of two key things. One, her voice and it's ability to wrap itself around any song. Two, her gutsiness to change the arrangements on many classics. When I read that she had slowed down "Ring of Fire", I was not happy. However, it works because of, again, the richness and tone of her voice. The title track is the lone original song written by Allison. "She Knows Where She Goes" was a track written by her sister, Shelby Lynne and Bill Bottrell (producer of Shelby's as well as producer of Sheryl Crow's Tuesday Night Music Club and her newest release Detours) but was never placed on a Shelby Lynne album....which is Allison's gain! This cd is mostly slow but is great for those rainy days and long drives. Thank you for your true artistry Allison and now, make your next release a full length album of all originals written by YOU!

Free Music Review: Very Enjoyable
Hit: 4 Stars

I really am enjoying this CD. I was unfamiliar with Moorer prior to receiving it, and her voice is phenomenal. I am a country/folk/storyteller music fan, so I appreciate the choice of songs. Smooth and easy to listen to, this is a great "time to sit back and relax with a glass of wine" type CD.
