Free Music Notes for The Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East 3/71

Free Music Review: This is an early DTS release
Hit: 5 Stars

In fact, this was the first DVD Audio I purchased; didn't even know what I was doing. I'd had a DVD player about 2 weeks, and when I found out they were doing DTS surround for audio only, I had to find something, and this was the 1st release I found. I did not hesitate...Fillmore East is STILL one of my favorite albums.

I never had the quad LP, but evidently that is the mix that was used to create this. It no doubt would have been better if they had gone back to the multi-tracks to create a new surround mix, but budgets are budgets. All things considered, this is a wonder to hear. The output isn't very high, so you'll have to turn it up...come on, use some of that amp! Also, it's true that the guitars are in the rear speakers (and that's about ALL that's in the rear speakers. I think it's a good thing, because you are able to hear just about everything the guitarists are doing all the time, which wasn't the case with all the 2 channel mixes. Also, the drums seem to be stronger; more punch to the low end. I'm not going to get rid of my stereo mixes, but most of the time when I want to listen to this album, this is the version my hand goes to (I don't have the SACD version). I'm somewhat amazed it's still available.

Free Music Review: WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!?
Hit: 5 Stars

What's not to like?!? If you already own this or know it, you can't possibly have anything bad to say about the mix or otherwise on this terrific collection. If your system is worth a crap, it's gotta sound amazing! Easily the best version of this available; DTS needs to do WAY more discs of classic stuff & otherwise! This is the only way to hear music! Now if they'll just do the complete "Live At Leeds" or "Made In Japan"!! The Wolf

Free Music Review: Excellent DTS mix
Hit: 5 Stars

This is an excellent live DTS mix. After reading some of the reviews, I was initially a bit skeptical. However, the sound is OUT OF THIS WORLD! Incredible! The discreet distribution from each speaker makes you feel as if you're at the concert. Hearing Duane Allman and Barry Oakley's guitar through the rear speakers gives you a better appreciation of their fine musical abilities.

I must say, 5.1 surround is a big change from stereo and you may have to acquire an appreciation for the newer technology. They didn't design surround sound to have only audience clapping and cheering from the back speakers.

Free Music Review: a very poor mix
Hit: 4 Stars

fantastic music, but why is so much of it coming from behind me? I hate to fall into the trap of reviewing the mix rather than the music, but i assume we all give this music 99 stars. I'm getting used to the mix, but I still wonder why Dickey, and Duane are playing from behind my couch, instead of to the left and right of my tv.

Free Music Review: The best version of this concert
Hit: 5 Stars

I had the quad LP in the 70's. We listened to it because a lot of the 2 channel LP's seemed poorly pressed. This DTS disc isn't perfect, but it is the best version you'll ever hear of this concert. Imagine, Duane- left rear, Dickey-right rear, and the rhythm and vocals up front. To me, the "Fillmore concerts" CD set was nice, but disappointing, in that many alternative recordings were used. I preferred the original song selection. This is worth owning (as is the Mobile Fidelity version, if you can find it.)
