Free Music Notes for Decade of Hits 1969-79Free Music Review: Put this Badboy in Your Collection Hit: 5 Stars
This is just a great collection of songs. Of course I'm being biased because the Allman Brothers happen to be one of my favorite rock groups, but if you are a "newbie" to their music you might want to start with this flawless CD. Even if you've been hanging out with Greg and Duane and the rest of the boys for some time, you still might want to invest in this CD because it really is a superb anthology.
One of my favorite songs on this CD is "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed". It is just a terrific jam and the story behind it is just great. Turns out Duane was in the cemetery one day just hangin' out and playing the guitar and came up with the music to this song and when he stood up to go home he saw a tombstone that said, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed". Just a fun bit of trivia, but it really endeared me to this group because yeah, on the outside they are a lot of grit, but inside they're pure soul and soul is something that's missing in a lot of the groups today. There's no sense of spirit...no driving force...just people who want to "cash in" as fast as they can.
In 25 years Brittney Spears will be "Brittney who?" Usher will be already be ushered out, but the Allman Brothers will still be - living or dead - kicking it into full gear.
Peace & Blessings
Free Music Review: Wake Up Mama, Turn The Allman Brothers Up! Hit: 5 Stars
The Allman Brothers Band is truly one of the greatest southern rock institutions of all time (they're right up there with Lynyrd Skynyrd), and this album captures the Brothers at their best. The cd opens with the excellent live version of the rockin' Statesboro Blues. This song, sets the stage for every other song to come; good clean rock n' roll. The Allman Brothers stood for everything that rock n' roll is supposed to be; great guitar solos, fun and catchy lyrics, and foot stompin', hand-clappin', sing along tunes. While some diehard Brother fans may argue that this cd does not capture all of the bands best songs, it is worth stating that this album only covers ten years (albeit the ten best years) of the bands illustrious career (1969-1979), and that the album does not claim to be a `greatest hits' or `best of' compilation. The casual fan (or the person just being introduced to the Allman Brothers) will absolutely love this cd; I really believe that this is the best introductory cd of the Brothers on the market. Before I bought this cd, I had only heard two or three Allman Brothers songs (Ramblin' Man, and Midnight Rider). After listening to this cd one time through I was saddened to think that it had taken me nineteen years to discover this great music.
Free Music Review: GREAT SOUTHERN ROCK COLLECTION Hit: 5 Stars
The Allman Brothers' A Decade of Hits 1969-1979 is arguably the best greatest hits compilation ever assembled and released within the Southern Rock genre.
Indeed, it is a most enjoyable listen. It has the early hits with the fine-tuned organ and the top-notch guitar work of the great Allman Brothers. The very early tracks from the 1969-1970 period, Whipping Post and all, are quite appealing and are reminiscent of those darker tunes in the style of Sugarloaf's Greeneyed Lady and Santana's Soul Sacrifice.
The commercially successful records that put the Allman Brothers at the top of the charts but were, sadly, recorded and released well after the death of Duane Allman are all there, from the number 2 hit, Ramblin' Man, to the immortal instrumental that has received international accolades, namely Jessica.
For those who want a perfect Allman Brothers sampler without delving into the boxed sets or anything that is outside that frequently played on the classic rock radio stations, this is it. You have the signature live and studio pieces that have preserved the Allman Brothers' legacy. 'Nuff said.

Free Music Review: A strong anthology Hit: 5 Stars
Concentrating as it does on the most popular songs released by the Allman Brothers, "A Decade of Hits," manages to hit all of the 1970s studio highlights from this troubled band's heyday. While it is true that the Allmans cemented their reputation with incredible live marathon songs (some lasting a half hour or more) there's hardly room on a disc like this for them. Instead, this CD makes the argument that the Allmans were first rate writers of more conventional rock songs as well. Many of these are staples on classic rock radio, like "Ramblin' Man," "Melissa," "Blue Skies," and "Midnight Rider." Other highlights include "Ain't Wasting Time No More," "Jessica," the Duane Allman swan song "Little Martha" and "Statesboro Blues." Also included are a couple of longer early blues rock cuts, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and "Whipping Post."The only drawback on this CD is that it doesn't contain any bonus material. But anyone just beginning their Allman Brothers collection could hardly ask for better.
