Free Music Notes for Alone in IZ WorldFree Music Review: Alone in IZ world Hit: 5 Stars
My Mama is of Hawaiian descent and met my Dad while he was stationed in Hawaii during WWII. Growing up in the NorthEast did not allow me the exposure to Hawaiian music that I would have liked. We listened to my Mama's Hawaiian music on 78's, but we never understood the language. The melodies were often pretty, but we were clueless as to what was being said. (Remember--our language was taken away and the elders discouraged using the Hawaiian language.)I was growing tired of Hawaiian music always being stereotyped and associated with Don Ho. So, I hit the music stores and stumbled across "IZ" by accident. I listened to the whole CD (Face the Future) in the store and bought it immediately. Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (say that 3 times fast!) is an angel with a beautiful voice who should be honored and remembered by the Hawaiian natives. On his new CD, "Alone in IZ world", the song "Starting all over again" couldn't be more appropriate in light of the bombings at the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Listen to it, absorb it, buy it. It's worth it! Mahaloaloha...J.G. Merola
Free Music Review: Transcendental Hawaiian at its best... Hit: 5 Stars
Iz is the soul man of Hawaii. My wife, daughter and I listen to Iz's tunes in this album, our favourite of his by far. My daughter is only several weeks old but she quickly tunes into Iz's deep soothing voice. In that aspect, "Alone in IZ World" has beaten all other lullaby CD's we own. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't be quick to label this CD as a lullaby CD. My family also loves to dance or just relax with this CD as well. You can hear Iz anytime and soon be taken into the Hawaiian islands right from your very own living room.
Do yourself a favor and don't just buy this CD for the "Somewhere over the rainbow" rendition. There are multiple tracks that are just as good. This CD has it all with crisp, clean, upbeat melodies with soothing vocal tracks. Tempo varies from track to track but flows well. The music is complex but he makes it sound so simple - this is key to Iz's genius.
Thanks Iz and sorry to get to know about you after you had passed. Your soul will always be with us through the musical legacy you left behind.... Aloha IZ.
Free Music Review: Hauntingly Insightful & Beautiful Hit: 5 Stars
I happen to see a part of a documentary about IZ while sitting in a restaurant in Maui about six months ago. It never said if he as alive or if he had died. There was just this beautiful grace about him that was amazing. A couple of days later before getting ready to leave I was in a cheesy gift shop and this CD happen to be on the counter. I bought it out of curiosity. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised in a big way. The Maui radio stations played "Over the Rainbow" quite often, but I never heard who the artist was. The entire album is incredible and peaceful....with a little humor thrown in for good measure. His rendition of "Over the Rainbow" still brings me to tears, so to speak (in a good way).....kind of like...."What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong. It was very fitting when they played in the last ER episode...a gentle peaceful passing with hope over the horizon. I think IZ got what this adventure called life is all about. If you want spend about 45 minutes in a world of Joy, Hope and the album!!!
Free Music Review: Welcome to the world of Brudda IZ... Hit: 5 Stars
I cannot lie... I have been a IZ fan as long as I can remember. This CD is a must have! But "Facing Future" is a better introduction to IZ... So buy both. Personally my favorite CD is Ka Anoi. I don't know if there is any of this CD still being sold. This is IZ's first solo album. It is raw and unrefined, but I think it has feeling and a closeness that is because of the raw editing. But the musical virtuosity is the strong point of this CD. If you can find this one... GET IT! Also if you can find any of the classic Makaha Sons of Niihau, with Iz, and his brother Skippy. I recommend it for anyone who loves old style Hawaiian music... Very classic. The Makaha Sons (of present) are a wonderful band but without IZ there is something missing. Get any Makaha Sons with IZ, Especially live versions, "Live at Hank's Place", "Makaha Bash 3" Great music and you get to laugh at Iz's corny jokes... Just wanted to share my love of Brudda Iz's music... Hope you find some of these CD's and enjoy them as much as I do.... ALOHA!!!
Free Music Review: SWEET MEMORIES Hit: 5 Stars
AH, BROTHER IZ, HOW WE MISS YOUR VOICE AND YOUR MUSIC!
YES, WE KNOW THAT YOU OFTEN RE-RECORDED SONGS THAT YOU'D ALREADY PERFORMED (AS IN THIS ALBUM), BUT THEY ARE WORTH REPEATING, AND EACH VARIATION IS LIKE A BRAND NEW DAY. AS A MEDICAL PERSON, MY PERSONAL GUESS IS THAT YOUR FAILING HEALTH PREVENTED YOU FROM GOING TO NEW TERRITORIES IN YOUR MUSIC...THAT PLUS YOUR POPULARITY. EVERYONE WANTED TO HEAR THE FAMILIAR FROM YOUR RICH-VOICED SOUL!
IZ, ONE OF YOUR GREATEST FANS HAS ADOPTED MY WIFE AND I AS HIS HUMANS. THIS FAN IS A BEAUTIFUL LILAC POINT SIAMESE CAT. HIS NAME IS "SMOKE". HE OFTEN ACTUALLY GOES TO OUR SOUND SYSTEM AND STARTS TURNING ON THE PUSH BUTTONS, THEN SITS THERE UNTIL WE START THE CDS. THEY OF COURSE HAVE TO BE "BROTHER IZ", ESPECIALLY THE HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE SLOW ONES, LIKE OUR FAVORITE "KALEOHANO".
THANKS TO GOD THAT YOU LIVED YOUR LIFE, IZ. AND EVEN MORE THANKS THAT YOUR WONDERFUL GIFT WAS SHARED WITH US ALL.
ALOHA NUI LOA,
DAVID AND VICTORIA EVANS
