Free Music Notes for One Day RemainsFree Music Review: WOW!!! Mark, I knew you could do it! Hit: 5 Stars
Just so people can know where I'm coming from, my favorite bands are Metallica, Rage, Tool, Creed, and CCR and I like Korn, Dashboard Confessional, Third Eye Blind, DMB,and Dream Theater as far as i know them. I like good punk, metal, numetal, classic rock, regular rock, anything with talent and a unique sound.
To move to this band, first of all, I was a fading Creed fan. I loved "My Own Prison", "Human Clay" grew on me very well, but "Weathered" was a bland, sappy flop in my opinion. The intensity was gone, and due to bits and pieces here and there i could tell that Mark had great talent and could throw out fast, intense music, but their sappyness was getting to me and I gave up on them.
This band has built so much on what i loved about creed and expanded their musical boundaries. God are these guys unique. All i hear on the radio is numetal stuff that can put out a few good songs, but they are so simplistic. Alter Bridge throws intense, but positive sounding music at you like a freight train. I love the smile this music puts on my face while i'm slamming my hands on my steering wheel. it's probably not for everyone, but after hearing enough, korn, godsmack, new metallica, and more repetetive, overly low and simplified "mean" riffs, this is SO refreshing. A great mix of melody and intensity.
I guess the best i can compare it to is a mixture of Creed and Dream Theatre (don't get angry yet). This album reminds me of bits of the song change of seasons (the great higher voice and guitar licks galore). The singer belts out great vocals for both their heavy and more emotional songs, and that combined with Tremonti on ultra-steroids, this album will give you chills of excitement.
To give you an idea of the songs and how they compare to creed and basically how they sound (the grades i give them are tougher than if I were be comparing this band to other lesser bands):
1: Find The Real; This song leads right into the album with a dissonant, heavy riff that tells you that this ain't creed no more. This is a song with some anger in it, and i really like it, but for more traditional creed fans(radio creed fans), it might be a little heavy and dissonant. 8/10
2: One Day Remains; If the first song didn't convince you that Mark is great, or this band for that matter, this one will! After a brief drum intro, it rips into the fastest consistent guitar Mark's played. It's constant in your face riffage, but it's the most perfect combination of melody and intensity i've ever heard. Great Song. 10/10
3: Open Your Eyes; You've probably heard this on the radio. It's very Creed-like, but very good still. The guitar is very well arranged, and it reaches a pinacle at the solo. Another strong song. 7/10
4: Burn It Down; This starts out with a quazi-dissonant but very enticing intro, and the vocals come in soft and merky. It builds slowly, and continues to be a pretty intense song. This songs vocals really do it for me. Hard to describe, but this song is great. The ending solo tops it off well. 8/10
5: Metalingus; This starts kind of like One Day Remains with drums, and a real heavy but simple riff is the main part of the song, but it's the additions Mark throws in anytime Myles isn't singing that make this song awesome. Just riffs and licks galore. Really aggressive lyrics and a great chorus are the icing on the cake. It's so fast and fun, and for all the Metallica fans out there, the end has a very Battery style end. Just hammering double bass drums and fast low guitar. 9/10
6: Broken Wings; This is where the album softens up a bit, but god do i love this song, the intro is really interesting. Think Hotel California gone Mark Tremonti. Then it kicks into its darker tone, till the beautiful chorus. This song is gonna be considered sappy creed style by some, but the improved guitar, and great vocals push these otherwise somewhat sappy songs to an intense level. Creed fans will love this song. 8/10
7: In Loving Memory; This song starts out with a very intricate little diddy, and it's pretty soft, but it's about Marks mom dying, which ups my respect for this song about 1000%. It's a subject rarely brought up in music, and i always like that. It will be compared to With Arms Wide Open, but for some reason it seems a lot more heartfelt and beautiful than WAWO, which was a really annoying song IMO. A little too Creedy 6/10.
8: Down To My Last; A good song, but after the last 2 being a little too sappy, this gets to be a bit much, but he really has an amazing voice, so it brings the song back a bit. It really has a good song, but i can almost see stapp doing his JC pose. It really has a great solo though, which makes it pretty complete. 7/10
9: Watch Your Words; And just when you thought this album was going to fade off into sappy songs like "Weathered," this metal-ish song comes in. Not quite as good as the title track or Metalingus, this song is still worth listening to for its great arabian-music riffs mixed with melodic sections. The vocals fall a bit short though. Still a good heavy song. 7/10
10: Shed My Skin; When this started I thought it sorta sounded like "Lullaby" from Weathered, which I really liked. Then it goes into some distorted melody, and a really great chorus, with fun, moving guitar. This one has a bit of a Creed sound to it again, but with Marks upped guitar intricacy, it really makes these songs much more enjoyable. 8/10
11: The End Is Here; This throws some fun arabian licks into an ok song. Think Carol of the Bells. Not much to say about it, but it's lacking some of the intensity in some spots, but there is some catchy stuff. The best parts of this song are marks licks. 6/10
Some people will see some of the same sappiness in some of these songs as some of the creed songs that got flack, but let me tell you, Mark has turned them into dynamic, interesting, heartfelt, fun songs to listen to. That, plus the harder of the songs are so intense, fun, and fast that you will be wondering what kind of lead weight scott stapp was to these guys. I love it all, definately check it out.
One Day Remains PosterCreed's Mark Tremonti, Scott Phillips, and Brian Marshall re-emerge as ALTER BRIDGE with new singer Myles Kennedy.
