Free Music Notes for Here & NowFree Music Review: Oh the voice.... Hit: 4 Stars
I love America and have seen them several times in 30+ years.
Tell me, is it just me, or is Gerry's voice getting "squeakier"?
Sounds like it to me, but I still love them.
This is a fine album and the new songs are catchy and creative.
Dewey's vocals and lyrics are right on and quite a pleasure
as in "Ride On".
Not their base work and the live tracks miss the mark somewhat,
but still a great album.
Free Music Review: Not as good as I remembered Hit: 3 StarsI saw America live a few years ago and they were amazing! However, I found this cd set a bit disappointing. One cd has new cuts on it and the other has their older stuff performed life. I prefer the cd with their old songs on it, but the quality I heard a few years ago isn't there. It's a decent cd if you don't pay too much for it.
Free Music Review: Almost..... Hit: 4 StarsThe CD is good and I'd buy it again but it's not as good as their earlier work. My favorite has always been Holiday. I sure wish all their work were available on CDs
Free Music Review: The Phoenix Rises Hit: 5 StarsI gave this 5 stars because there is not one song on here that I don't like--a really rare occurrence with any album. In my opinion, this is America's best LP so far in their long musical career. The songs have great melodies to them and are performed perfectly within the classic America style with magnificent harmony vocals. And they throw in a cover version of "Indian Summer" by Maplewood(one of my current favorite bands)which has the author of the song joining in on guitar. All I can say is that Gerry Beckley & Dewey Bunnell must be extremely satisfied and content to know that 35 years after that first album they are still writing and performing music on a level above and beyond what has come before. That being said, I can't wait for the next one.
Free Music Review: Here & Now....about time! Hit: 5 StarsThis is the same America that I listened to in college. I knew the words to Horse With No Name, Ventura Highway, and Sister Golden Hair by heart. I listened to them sing You Can Do Magic a few years later, and then I had to content myself with listening to the same old songs on the Classic Rock stations...always the same ones, even though there was a whole library of music out there that these guys made. Now, in one new release, there are as many great songs as there were in most of the previous CD's combined! The great harmonies and lyrics are still there, but the collaboration with Iha and Schlesinger, among others, makes this CD something new and special. It would be hard to pick one song that shines above others. Chasing The Rainbow is my first pick, but then the cover of Always Love is strong, as are Indian Summer (also a cover),One Chance, and Ride On. Bunnell's vocals on This Time are the best he has ever done. And if the new music isn't enough, there is an entire CD of biggest hits recorded at XM Radio studios that is incredibly energized. These guys have managed to put together a timeless sound that is appealing to anyone who likes accoustic guitar music and the somewhat nebulous category of classic rock.
