Free Music Review: Hi-Fi-ve!

Since buying this CD, I have become addicted. I beleive this is one of American Hi-Fi's greatest albums. It starts on a heavy note, surround, remenant of punk bands like blink 182, though it looses its edge towards the end, slowly turning into a rage against the machine song. Flavour of the week also starts heavy, initially it could be attributed to korn or slipknot, then tones down slightly, putting a truely Blink like set of lyrics on top. It keeps like this all along, with a theme about what seems to be a pothead boyfreind cheating on his girlfreind. That said, the lyrics do get repetetive, charnging 2 or 3 words every verse. A bigger mood again stays with the heavy theme, with some nice drumming to keep the listener entertained while the verses lack guitar in places. The lyrics, make little sense, making me think of Nirvana, and the grunge movement. Safer on the outside is not one of my favorites, s it is a very soft ballad, remenant of travis. THis song has little backing at first, after half a minute though, it kicks in with large amounts of drumming and guitar, which disapears soon after. I do not like this particular idea, as it eems like the composers have little left. THis is owever nnullified as we switch to I'm a fool, some solid grunge, wiht high pitched guitars, and some strong vocals, very well sung. This is one of my favorites, as it seems like something in between grunge and soft rock, a perfect balance. Hi fi killer starts early with vocals and some distortion/overdrive backing, another excellent song, lyrics remenant of the old classic, video killed the radio stars. Blue day kicks in wiht some good distortion, and some rather odd drumming, using lots of cymbals/high hats. One of the few songs with swear words, though these are to little effect, even retracting from the song itself. The lyrics are a bit of a puzzeler though. My only enemy starts as a very vocal song, with little melodic backing, until the drums kick in, and we hit an all out American Hi-Fi hit. Don't wait for the sun is perhaps the worst song in my opinion, as it seems to be a filler, to beef up the album. THe subject of the song itself is rather questionable, talking about the sun going black. Another perfect day is probably my favorite, as it kicks in with what some could say is nirvana like acoustic guitar. The lyrics are also good and well sung, with an amazing solo in the middle, the first on the cd which could be said is better than the song itself. The druming is light, so as not to retract from the light ballad liek atmosphere of the song. Scar kicks in with an excellent intro. It is an intresting song, with clever lyrics, and some strong guitar. What about today kicks in wiht what seems to be a "smells like team spirit intro", which suddenly disapears into a devoid verse, and a stupid chorus. Wall of sound is possibly one of the best cd finishers ever, as it almost seems like one of those classic "leaving on a jet plane" type songs. All round a good cd, wiht a few weak points, but easily made up by some of the excellent hits. 5/5 from me.
