Free Music Review: A Very Welcome Surprise

Maybe it was just me, but I was expecting this cd to be filled with tracks taken directly off the show. To my surprise, that's not what the cd was. No 1:30 tracks with the audience reactions covering up the vocals. To my surprise, the tracks are full studio recorded songs, so everything is blended well, everyone is on key, etc. It gives a very good sample of how the top 10 finalists would sound with a record contract.

The best way I can describe the tracks are to say the songs are all covers. You obviously knew this, but nothing has been cut out or changed like during competition. Here are some of my quick feelings about the tracks:

Natural Woman - Kelly sings her heart out like always. Unfortunately no super-high whistle-tone at the end like she did in competition, but still great.

Respect - Maybe my least favorite on the disc, but I still really like it. The only thing i don't like is that the background seems almost to manufactured with drum machines etc. Kelly still sings her heart out, but it's not as powerful as when she competed with it. Then, the song relied on her voice. Now, with everything blended, it seems to be lacking a bit. Still a good track though

For Once In My Life - Well done. One of Justin's best performances is transferred very well.

Get Here - Excellent. I loved the competition performance, and I'm sure this track would make Paula cry again.

Piece Of My Heart - Initially I would have preferred "Mary Jane" or "I'm The Only One," but she sounds incredible on this track. It's very well done, and all those who think Nikki didn't deserve to go as far as she did in the show should just listen to this track

House Is Not A Home - Tamyra's best performance makes for one of the best songs on the disc. Again, worthy of making Paula cry...again.

Lately - My favorite song on the disc. RJ has a bright recording future, and this is an absolutely beautiful cover of s great Stevie Wonder song.

Ain't No Sunshine - "That's my song" as Christina said on the show. It definitely is. great.

If You Really Love Me - Arguably Ryan's best performance on the show too. A very good track. Musically very well done.

My Cherie Amour - Great Track. Sounds better than he did in competition, definitely. AJ should have a great studion career ahead of him. The track sounds great

I'll Be - The guitar differs from the actual Edwin McCain version, but it's still very good. The song becomes a much sweeter ballad instead of being somewhat of a power ballad like the original. EJay still gets to use his amazing range and still flairs at the climax making for a great track.

Easy - I was most sceptical about this track. Jim's performance was nominated for worst performance on the American Idol site. This track however is really good. He doesn't go flat and the song isn't boring. I dont' know if it's because of the studio or not, but the song is really good.

California Dreamin - The best of all the combined pieces on the show, but this one lacks a little. they all blended well on the show, but in this track, it seems like the individual voices are a bit too strong, just like all the other combined performances. It's not a bad track by any means, but the lack of the harmonizing blend bugged me a little. They also allow all 10 to have a solo line, since the song was originally done with only the final 8

A Moment Like This & Before Your Love - Both very well done tracks, but you can read about those by looking up the single. It's a good bonus for those who couldn't find the single in stores or were just too cheap to buy it. :-p
