Free Music Review: What an improvement from the last 3 seasons!
Hit: 5 Stars
It's no secret to all my friends that I am a huge American Idol fan and it has gotten more and more every year. The downside has been that every year they have put together a studio recorded CD and the last 4 (although 2004's was better) have included good vocals from the top 12 contestants but very cheesy music accompaniment.
2005's however, I am pleased to say is much much better. Mostly due to them getting smart and having a real producer involved. Enter: Desmond Child who has been known for his work on reviving Cher's career back in the late 80's. He does wonders for these fresh new artists and here is my review Track by Track:
Independence Day - Carrie Underwood *****
I was hoping for them to put her version of Heart's 1987 #1 hit "Alone" on here but this is definitely the next best thing. Her vocals are top notch which is probably why she was crowned the new American Idol. Her stage presence needs some work but that will come in time.
I Don't Want To Be - Bo Bice ***
Not being a big fan of his I was a little skeptical on what song they would put on here by him because every songs he sang on the show sounded the same, well until he did that acapella performance a couple weeks back. His take on Gavin DeGraw's hit is very good, in fact, I like it better than Gavin's version. We will be hearing a lot more from him as long as he stays away from the hard rock and does songs that showcases his true voice.
Best Of My Love - Vonzell Solomon ****
The trouble with the remakes I have heard of this song is that they have had weak instrumentation. Desmond does wonders matching music to go with Vonzell's pure full voice. I was hoping for her take on Denise William's 1984 #1 hit "Let's Hear It For The Boy" but can't have everything.
A House Is Not A Home - Anwar Robinson *
Simply put, AWFUL. Not sure what happened here but this is the most BORING redition of this songs I have ever heard. Sorry Anwar!
You Don't Have To Say You Love Me - Nadia Turner ***
I have loved Nadia from day one because of the different style she portrays. The music on this is kinda weak but Nadia brings it home. Can't wait for her first CD!
Part-Time Lover - Nikko Smith ****
It amazes me how close Desmond Child came to duplicating Stevie Wonder's original music to this and it fits Nikko's voice quite well! Nikko, stay away from Hip Hop and keep the R&B/Pop aspect, it showcases your voice beautifully!
My Funny Valentine - Constantine ***
I was surprised they put this song on the CD by him. I was thinking Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" would have fit better but he does quite well with this. I still think he hits a bad note at the end of the song, but who knows
Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Jessica Sierra *****
The second best performance on this CD! I was awed by her live performance and even more so on this disc! I love this girl's voice and she better have a CD come out soon! Great job Jessica!!!! You did Bonnie Tyler proud!
Everytime You Go Away - Anthony Federov *****
With Anthony being my choice for the American Idol this year I had high expectations on his song on this CD. Again, I was disappointed they didn't choose the song I really wanted which was his version of Celine Dion's "I Surrender", BUT, his take on Paul Young's classic #1 hit makes the grade. Anthony, I would love to write songs for you!!!!!!
Against All Odds - Scott Savol ***
The underdog of the season surprised me with this studio version of Phil Collins big hit because he didn't quite put the emotion I was hoping for like he did on his live performances. Nonetheless his voice is strong and shows the potential he really has.
Knock On Wood - Lindsey Cardinale ***
Very strong heart pounding music blasts and an unforgettable version of this Disco hit. Lindsey's voice is a little weak at times but the music keeps you going. This one has grown on me.
God Bless The Child - Mikalah Gordon (not even worth 1 star)
Why? Why? How did she make it to the top 12? This performance is worse than Anwar's. Garbage.
When You Tell Me That You Love Me - Ensemble ****
Again, Desmond does wonders! This was an OK performance when done live but in the studio it is brilliant. Check out, however, their "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" on the single of this. It is Perfect and very moving!
