Free Music Notes for American Idol season 3: Greatest Soul Classics

Free Music Review: Way better than the originals!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I just got my first listen of the contestants from american idol season 3 singing the greatest soul classics and I am left with one question. Is there any way to get rid of the old versions so we don't have to hear them anymore. After hearing the version of "Dock of the Bay" on this cd I'm saddened that Otis Redding had to record it first. Little by little america is realizing that we don't need artists to learn to play instruments, write their own songs and be creative, we need more reality TV to find what we need in life. I went ahead and threw all of my old REM, Tori Amos and 10,000 maniacs in a pond because they were way too deep with songs about things that mattered. If a song really did matter off of those cds, someone will eventually cover it on american idol and it will be better than the old version anyway. This show finds the greatest singers in the world and lets me vote on who should be a superstar. The winner then immediately gets crammed down our throats and becomes the biggest star in pop music. That's totally how the music business should work. I'm tired of people telling me about how good Bob Dylan was or Stevie Wonder. They would've never won on american idol and therefore should be thrown out as artists who matter. Simon cracks me up by demeaning people and making fun of their appearance and voice. It teaches us a good lesson, if someone is unattractive or can't sing, call attention to it and make them feel like a complete loser. That's the way I deal with people now because if america idol does it, I'm on the bandwagon.

As far as this cd, move over motown, the real soul singers have been picked by america!!

I openly spaek as a Diana/ La Toya fan when I review this:

1. Chain of Fools (Fantasia)- She is pretty good, but there are other soul songs that are better for her.

2. Me and Mrs. Jones (George)- This song is soooo smooth. George is great!

3. Heard it Through the Grapevine (Diana)- YES! SHe sang this AWESOMELY!

4. If You Don't Love me by Now (La Toya)- SOmeone said she was playing it safe....... Yeah.. NO! O my gosh! She WAILS! YES!

5. Neither One of Us (Jennifer)- This is great, perfect song, and Jennifer showed a style in her voice that she never got to use in the show, since she sang a bunch of dynamic songs!

6. You Make me Feel Brand New (Amy)- Amy has a great style, and a beautiful voice! This is better than how she sang it on the show!

7. Dock of the Bay (Matt)_ He sounds really good! I wish I had heard more of him on the show...

8. Midnight Train to Georgia (Jasmine)- This is a good song for Jasmine.

9. My Girl (JPL)- He sounds good with this song. I admit that he made me forget how much dislike him and this song...

10. Until you Come Back to me (Camile)- Cool song... But if you ever watched the early episodes of Sister, Sister, Camile sounds a TON like Roger.

11. Betcha By Golly Wow (Leah)- I can't stand this song, but Leah sings it pretty well.

12. You are Everything (John)- Ummm, it's good. I can't stand John, but he sounded better here than any performance on the show...

13. Ain't no Mountain High Enough (all)- Really cool! Although it is La Toya, Geroge, and Fantasia dominated... I think JPL and Camile got one line, Diana got 2, Jennifer got around 5 and you can't even hear the rest...

Free Music Review: One True Thing
Hit: 5 Stars

"So?" "Blah." "Well, okay, but heard it all before." Or so I found myself saying to the overproduced retreads of soul classics these blandly credible singers deliver on this antiseptic collection. Good enough just AIN'T MISBEHAVIN'. MOST of the singers hit the notes and yet in the process, miss the point altogether. Soul music is LIFE LIVED LARGE and these mall rats simply have neither the chops nor the sweat soaked fury to honor the legends whose work they trivialize here.
It's MOTOWN NIGHT at the local Karaoke Bar...UNTIL something simply magnificent and darn nearly revelatory occurs: Ms. Jennifer Hudson tears it up on "Neither One of Us..." and so begins the tectonic shift sure to come. I'd give this righteous performance five million stars and still end up in debt to this woman. She is, that good.
Gladys Knight is the personification of pure soul singing and yet this tremendously talented young woman very nearly reclaims this classic from Ms. Knight. And I bet Gladys lit up when she heard this version - FINALLY, a voice and a personality worthy of contending to even continue Ms. Knight's (and Chaka's and Aretha's and Dusty's) legacy.
Why is anyone still watching "American Idol"? It should be re-christened, "False Idolatry" since Ms. Hudson took HER leave of all the silliness. Get out those "I remember seeing her when"- time capsule diaries folks, that sound you hear is the future of soul singing. Call it what it is: the Grand Hudson. The Grand Ms. Jennifer Hudson.

Free Music Review: DID SEASON 3 HAVE A STRONGER CROP OF. . . . T A L E N T ? !
Hit: 5 Stars

In the past, I did not admired the weak quality of musical production supporting previous AMERICAN IDOL GROUP CD releases. The blatant commercial attempt by BMG to cash in on national pride during season two was done in poor taste and was very tacky. Season 2 produced several CD group releases that were more embarrassing than musical. What a difference a year can make! I auditioned this product with a great deal of skepticism. I was surprised. GEORGE HUFF and his three DIVAS (JENNIFER HUDSON, LATOYA LONDON and FANTASIA BARRINO) record superb solo efforts. HUFF is destined to become a major tour de force on the R/B chart. I was also impressed listening to the recorded quality of the vocal performances from the weaker contestants; MATT; JON PETER and that 16 year old tone deaf JOHN STEVENS. On this CD they deliver credible performances when placed under the guidance of a solid producer armed with PRO TOOLS. The beauty behind this project is the strong musical arrangements. The musical talent on this CD surpasses last year's overall collection (with the exceptions of Rueben, Clay and powerhouse Kimberley Locke). The production on the new CD is superior.
This CD will please ardent fans of all ages and may surprise a few older skeptics such as myself! You don't need to be a fan of the show to enjoy this CD. JENNIFER HUDSON's vocal delivery on her solo is pure musical perfection... Could there be another JENNIFER HOLLIDAY in the making?
