Free Music Review: Intended as an introduction to the Smithsonian Folkways collection...

...this is a great such introduction. Twenty six tracks from all over the traditional American music, "roots," field. Blues, jazz, bluegrass, older popular songs, what we would call folk music. There are samples available on amazon, listen to what a crazy wide variety there is. And this is a tiny snapshot of the sounds that the Folkways folks have recorded. Some of the recordings go back to wire recorders (pre-tape) or record cutters (record recorders) on people's front porches. Obviously the sound quality isn't always the best.
