Free Music Notes for Twilight of the Thunder God (W/Dvd) (Dig)Free Music Review: Genre Blurring and Beautiful for it! Hit: 5 Stars
First thing you'll hear when you put this cd in is a melodic riff pattern that is oft-used, making you think that perhaps the guys have run out of ideas... but then their traditional speedy rhythm buzz sits underneath the riff and before the song is done you've been shown that they're picking up tricks from Dragonforce in a small solo riff that sounds like Herman Li's now infamous Nintendo squeal.
Amon Amarth have always been very melodic in composition. They've taken that idea up a notch on this new disc... they've infused the best aspects of powermetal and mixed some great death metal into it.
They do occasionally use some riff patterns that have been used before, but they do them so well... I would dare say that this is the 'poppiest' death metal album I've ever heard. It's nowhere near as dark as "With Odin on Our Side," so don't expect that kind of death metal, this is death-metal tinged with power, and it is great.
Stand out songs for me are "Where is your God," "Twilight of the Thunder God," and the uber-melodic "Varyags of Miklagaard."
EDIT:
Two weeks later and I must add that the song "Live for the Kill" is sublime... the classical interlude is so unexpected and so beautifully placed that it stands apart of the album as a whole and lifts this album to a height they haven't reached before. If you haven't already bought it, get it in your hands as fast as possible!
Free Music Review: Well Worth It Hit: 5 Stars
Having listened to a lot of this band's previous work, I purchased this cd in preparation for a show which I was going to be seeing. I am always a little reluctant to purchase a new cd, as so often you can get one or two great tracks, and then a bunch of filler in between. Luckily for me, this was not one of those albums. Amon Amarth have composed a masterpiece which is a great listen all the way through. Johan Hegg's growls are deep yet still very intelligible, and the vocals at no time overpower the music itself. As growl vocals are one of the elements that can most easily "scare off" newcomers to the genre, this makes the music very inviting to those who may not be familiar with this type of music. Meanwhile, the whole album has a heavy melodic pulse which separates it from some metal pieces which can be flat or thin at times. The tempo is not too fast, but the music is technical and heavy, especially as you near the middle and later tracks.
In addition to the cd, there is a live dvd of Amon Amarth's Summer Breeze concert included in the package. The sound quality was fantastic, and this was a great example of an Amon Amarth show at it's best.
All and all, I am very pleased with this album, and would recommend it to metal fans, and newcomers to the genre as well. You are getting a great metal album, and a great dvd all in one affordable package. This purchase is definitely well worth it.
Free Music Review: This is an Incredible Album! Hit: 5 Stars
Just by reading this you have shown that you have an interest in the kind of music Amon Amarth produces, and if you are in any way inspired by this type of music, you will not find a better example of all that is good about what metal has become. This stands to be a true classic 20 years from now as the greats of the past still stand tall today such as Iron Maiden's Piece of Mind, Judas Priest's Defenders of the faith, Dio's Holy Diver, Ozzy's Diary of a Madman, Metalica's Master of Puppets etc. etc. Yes its that good!! for those who are not familiar with Johan Hegg's vocal style, I recommend that you do your best to dis-associate any associations you may have to link with just about every pretender who ever tried to use this style in the past. Johan Hegg Stands alone in this category. He does the un-imaginable of conveying true heart felt emotion in a growl that I have never heard anyone even come close to. He is the best in the business hands down. The rest of the band are the epitome of what good heavy metal is supposed to be, and they have refined all that got us excited about this form of music in the first place and concentrated it into a form of crack for the musical soul and delivered it to us in the form of a Viking warrior.
Bang your heads my friends, it doesn't get any better than this! \m/
Free Music Review: Twilight of the Thunder God Hit: 5 Stars
I'm fairly new to Amon Amarth and not a particularly big fan of death metal (or whichever genre they are supposedly playing), but I must admit that this album absolutely blew me away. It is right up my musical alley, as it were. The guitars are distorted in a way that reminds me of the metal of my youth 10-15 years ago, rough and tough. Not the overly distorted, too deep 'nu-metal sound' many bands seem to favour these days. The drumming is solid, with good double bass drums, and the vocals are really good. They fit the music and never become softly sung choruses, yet the lyrics are easily understood. A rare, but very welcome, mix.
This brings me on to the composition of the music. It's fast and furious, yet very melodic and creative. Nice tempo changes and very fitting solos. This is old school metal played in a modern way. Very nice. The riffs are catchy and I often find myself humming them when I wait for the lift or some such. A fate, that, up until now, only was suffered by some of Beethovens 'riffs'.
In conclusion I'd say, that this is one of the best albums of indeed any genre I've purchased for quite some time. I'm already looking forward to their next effort. Highest possible recommendation.
Free Music Review: Where Is Your God? Hit: 5 Stars
When I first heard Amon Amarth I knew they were talented. They've grown exponentially through every album, layering the guitars and vocals to sound HUGE. This album has everything from the sing alongs they are famous for, to the intense death metal songs like "Twilight of the Thunder God."
The album features guest appearances from Children of Bodom, Entombed and Apocalyptica. But, they were built in such a way that they are repeatable live. Although, the guitar solo in "Twilight of the Thunder God" is going to be hard to do I'm sure.
The DVD that comes with the disk is also amazing. It features a live concert from Summer Breeze 2007 where they had a Viking ship on stage. Lots of pyrotechnics and fire. Overall the best live performance they've put on video so far. I really loved "Cry of the Black Birds" and "Without Fear."
This is a must buy. If you love Amon Amarth you are going to love this album. If you love good, solid death metal you'll appreciate it as well.
