Introduced to "Yeti" through my intense fascination with Can, I emerged from this experience in utter disappointment. With the foreknowledge of how unique experimental music from the seventies can be, I did not expect "Yeti" to be remotely like Can, even though they are both dubbed as "Krautrock", but I did expect such a revered avant-garde band to be able to do more than tastelessly bang away on their instruments.
As far as compositional skills go, the members of Amon Duul II are seriously lacking. Though the listener can catch a glimpse of an interesting melody occasionally slithering up through the sonic mess, it generally disappears as quickly as it surfaced to be replaced by talentless noise. There are no songs or sections that are remotely moving. As a musician, it is particularly excruciating to listen to such awful instrumental performances. Though this album is improvisational in nature and mistakes should be expected, it is painfully clear that none of the members are more than amature musicians. As far as vocals go... well... just listen to the pathetic attempt at an operatic vibrato on "Archangels Thunderbird".
To my ears, "Yeti" does nothing more than mock the experimental nature of the early seventies. If this album was recorded with the intention of being a sincere, timeless, progressive anomaly, I am sickened.
Interesting? No. Accomplished? Certainly not. Listenable? Not at all. Worth your money? Probably not.
