Free Music Notes for Amos Lee

Free Music Review: Refreshing
Hit: 5 Stars

I discovered Amos Lee in the most random way - which is also usually the most rewarding. Getting home from work the other night, my wife had the TV tuned to a music video channel I didn't even know we had. An Amos Lee video came on, and I immediately picked up on the great vibe to the song, and the sincerity and soulfulness in Lee's voice. My wife changed the channel within 30 seconds - I don't think she was even paying attention - but not before I saw the name of the artist on the video. I immediately added this record - and his follow-up "Supply and Demand" to my online hold list at the local library and was finally able to listen to it this morning on my bus ride in to work.

Immediately I was able to notice similarities to Jack Johnson, Ben Harper and Norah Jones (whose signature piano sound I also recognized immediately on a couple of tracks, but wasn't sure it was actually her until I read a little bit more about this recording). But that's just it - you can make comparisons to these other artists, but Amos Lee also has his own unique voice and sound. He is perhaps on a parallel track with these other artists, but he is not traveling the exact same road. (One lyric, I admit, kind of annoyed me - "Every moral has a story" - which I'm pretty sure is also a line in a Ben Harper song. Hopefully Lee did not outright plagiarize...) All in all, without detailing every track on the album, this is a very worthwhile effort and we can only look forward to more great music from Amos Lee for years to come.

Free Music Review: Buy it! NOW!
Hit: 5 Stars

Buy this CD! NOW! In fact... buy two! After you listen a couple times, you'll think of someone you know who needs to have one, also.

I went to a concert about a year ago and Amos Lee was the opening act. I don't remember who the "headliner" was, but I'll never forget Amos Lee. I was hooked from the first song.

Amos Lee is a charismatic and soulful artist who has a unique way of using language to make the familiar seem fresh and new, while at the same time, making new things feel as familiar as a well worn glove. His songs have a distinct musicality that emphasizes his vocal range and the sweet purity of his voice; as beautiful as any instrument you will ever hear.

Through Mr. Lee's music, there is a recurring hopefulness and determination to beat the odds that is addictive and soul-satisfying. "Dreamin" is a perfect example of sarcasm turned into determination. "Float Back On Top" tells us to get back up - don't stay down. And so it goes.

From the beautiful "Arms of a Woman" to the elegantly simple "Black River", this CD will give you an emotional roller-coaster ride you won't soon forget. The more I play it, the more I love it. I'm sure you will too!

After note: If you get a chance to see Amos Lee in person, don't miss it. He was on tour opening for Norah Jones and is now on tour with Bob Dylan on the west coast. He'll be on Jay Leno's show on March 23rd. Don't miss it!

Free Music Review: Very laid back debut
Hit: 5 Stars

Amos Lee sings like himself. Forget comparing him to anyone else. Strongly original songs (that's his handwriting on the liner notes) a little blues, a little soul, a little folk (not jazz, despite the label!) and a lot of fine tenor.

The arrangements are spare, and there's a element of keyboard on the recordings, although I believe he travels without one in his live performances. And while his voice is soothing and aesthetically pleasing (probably not as effective on covers as when telling his own tales through his lyrics), his strength is in the songwriting. He's got a bit of a mix here, and you get the impression he's only scratched the surface of everything he's written. Good news, we'd like to hear more.

"Arms of a Woman" may just be the best song I've heard this year. I can listen to it over and over. I love Lee's pacing of the song....no rush, no need to get the words out. "Seen It All Before" is similar, and strong. There's a lot of sorrow in these two selections. "Keep It Loose, Keep It Tight", "Soul Suckers, "Black River" and "Love in the Lies" are outstanding, and I mellowed out to "All My Friends" at the end. There's not a bad song in the bunch, although the CD runs a little short, at just over a half hour. Oh well, more opportunity to hear "Arms of A Woman" more often.

This just may be the CD that is tops on my playlist this year. Hoping to hear more from young Mr. Lee.

Free Music Review: This album you will enjoy very much.
Hit: 5 Stars

I am quite taken with this new voice, Amos Lee. He speaks to me about life and the troubles of life. But he also sings of romance and family love that keep us all going and wishing for our childhood again.

My favorite track is "Arms of a Woman," it is a beautiful love song about what it feels like to be in love with a woman. This feeling stays with you long after she is gone. I can listen to this track over and over because it is pretty. "Keep it Loose, Keep it Tight" is a song about trying to stay true to yourself while searching for what makes you happy. "Black River" is a great song that makes you forget all your problems. This song really puts your mind at ease.

Some of these tracks sound like something you would hear during a jam session just playing and having fun especially the song "Give it Up." This song has a lively beat that will get your feet tapping. "All My Friends" is the best friendship song I've heard in years. It is a song about the influence friends can have on you. "Bottom of The Barrel" is a song that reminds us that we can overcome any hardship in life and rise. It is a very optimistic song about never giving up. I enjoyed this album very much.

This album is to savor and listen to over and over again to pick up every nuance of the lyrics and the voice. Highly recommended.

Free Music Review: Thoroughly Enjoyable
Hit: 5 Stars

This probably the best cd out that you are not hearing on the radio. This CD reminds me of the quality albums from the late seventies like James Taylor's JT, Sweet Baby James or CSNY's Deja Vu. Minimal instruments and not over produced in any way. The songs flow nicely together as a set and I have found myself going back again and again to it. The songs have a familiar and soothing quality to them and seem to fit like a pair of your most comfortable shoes. "Keep it Loose, Keep it Tight" and "Seen It All Before" - cannot believe I am not hearing these on the radio. They reach down to your heart and soul. "Arms of a Woman" and "Dreamin" showcase Amos's voice and make you want to sing along with him. "Give It Up" is just plain fun. "Soul Suckers" and "Colors" are both excellent. It is one of those rare cds that you can listen to and enjoy from start to finish. This is a CD that will appeal to all ages, my daughter Lauren in high school loves it!
The band is solid- the drummer Fred Berman is excellent and provides a great foundation for the other band members, Jaron Olevsky is solid on bass and Nate Skiles is extremely versatile playing multiple instruments. This CD is a must have for me, I had to buy more than one as my wife and daughter both fight me for it! Hope you like the review and the CD, thanks for reading- Paul H.
