Free Music Notes for Rock of Ages: Hymns & FaithFree Music Review: Beautiful Album Hit: 5 Stars
Doesn't it seem the best albums are those that don't pull you in on the first listen? There's something usually superficial about albums you love on the first spin. But Amy's latest album is one that has such depth and range, if takes a couple of weeks to grow on you. What a beautiful album she's offered us. At first, I was unsure whether or not it could even begin to rival "Legacy." But it does, no question.
Every recording is a beautiful revival of old hymns. Amy's voice has beautifully matured. Those that are critical of the bluegrassy-country feel to this recording, what do you expect? Amy is a Southern Tennessee girl, through and through. Her voice is perfectly suited to the country-pop sound. While I love her earlier purely pop albums, Amy really has found her place in this genre. Vince is a perfect producer for her and I enjoy the guitar and piano solos as much as Amy's interpretation of these wonderful hymns.
A+ Amy, and bring us more!
Free Music Review: Phenomenal Hymns Album Hit: 5 Stars
This album is the perfect follow-up to her first hymns album "Legacy". Like its predecessor this record has a country sound to most of the songs, which works perfectly well.
The album starts off with a wonderfully upbeat bluesy version of the song Anywhere With Jesus. Other standouts include the self-penned Carry You, Sweet Will of God, which features an old acapella recording by Grant, and the beautiful old hymn O Master Let Me Walk With Thee, which has an Irish feel to it.
The only weak moment on the record is the new version of her hit El Shaddai. It is still quite well done, but the new arrangement does not really add anything to the song, which in the end makes it superfluous.
Over all this album is a real gem and therefore should not be missing in any (Christian) cd collection.
Free Music Review: Amy has done it again with "Rock of Ages!" Hit: 5 Stars
The leading lady of Christian music has done it again! And what a gem, just a beautiful album over all. In these times of life when we need a reminder that we are loved by Him these songs bring us peace and remind us of just that, they have since the early 1800's. I love the feel of this album you can't label it as just having one particular type of sound, because in the 13 tracks there is something for everyone. Regardless of if you have heard these hymns or not they will move you, and be great inspiration. At age 21 I had never heard a few, and so what a blessing it is to be introduced to them by Amy, just like I had on "Legacy". Thank you Amy, for reminding us the music began so many years ago in the words of these hymns.
Free Music Review: Rock is Top Hit: 5 Stars
I have been an Amy fan for 23 years! I have to be honest, the first time I listened to this CD, outside of carry you and helping hand, I wasn't sure. The style is much different than the traditional Amy sound. I really liked Legacy and loved Simple Things (containing Looking For You, which may be my all time favorite Amy song), I just wasn't sure of this project. The hymns are not ones I remember singing in church. But now after a few weeks, each time I listen I find a new connection; a string of lyrics that speak to me, a sting of notes that catch my attention. I recently have found myself singing or humming this while at work. So, Amy fans - keep an open mind and you will find this recording to be a true winner!
Free Music Review: Old Time Hymns revisited... Hit: 5 Stars
I've been enjoying this album along with Amy's 2002 release. Amy has brought new life to these old time, classic hymns some of us grew up on and still sing today. Today, we tend to sing the modern hymns and lay to rest those songs which still move many of us. Amy chose to bring back those hymns in a traditional, country-style setting and it works! Some of my favorite hymns sung here are Sweet Will Of God, Abide With Thee, El Shaddai, Carry You, Know We Are Christians/Helping Hand. If you remember and enjoy the older hymns, you most likely will like these versions and if you're new to these songs, this is a wonderful introduction.
