That is the best word to describe this follow-up effort from this, regrettably, virtually unknown artist. There are hints of Norah Jones, Martha Wainwright, Jolie Holland, & even Mazzy Star here 'n' there. Yet Amy definitely has a sound & style all her own.
I recommend all the selections on this album. Her interpretations are such that you forget the original versions, but it is her own compositions I admire most. (I still cannot get enough of `Cupid's Arrow'!!!)
My only gripe is its shortness. It leaves you wanting more & more of what you just heard. So the best solution is to simply play it again! Or put on her other album!
The arrangements are perfect (well-known & respected Jim Dickinson this time `round). And it is not that Amy has the most powerful or amazing voice. Not at all. She is a singer who is clearly aware of her strengths & her weaknesses, & therefore sings in such a fashion that it puts you in some sort of...heaven. Honestly!
I discovered Amy LaVere (as I do with many artists) from, of all places, the Ben Stiller/Farelly Bros movie Heartbreak Kid ("Take 'Em or Leave 'Em").
On top of all that she's a beautiful specimen of a woman & plays the upright-bass on everything to boot!
Check her out AND her amazing debut "This World Is Not My Home" which is equally as good (yet as short as well).

It's probably unfair to compare every young, sweet-voiced, genre-bending chanteuse with Norah Jones. Though Amy LaVere similarly sounds jazzy and torchy with touches of country and soul, what distinguishes her are the Memphis grooves of producer Jim Dickinson and the edgier sensibility she brings to material such as "Killing Him," "Pointless Drinking," and "People Get Mad." A stand-up acoustic bassist and sometime actress (Black Snake Moan, Walk the Line), LaVere brings a seductive lilt to "Tennessee Valentine" and "Cupid's Arrow," with the funky propulsion of Carla Thomas's "That Beat" and the relentless throb of "Washing Machine" showing that she can be earthy as well as dreamy. An open-hearted rendition of Bob Dylan's "I'll Remember You" closes this solid sophomore effort. --Don McLeeseTwo years, many gigs, and one big, busted love affair later, Amy LaVere went into the studio with Jim Dickinson to craft her dark and sexy second album, Anchors and Anvils. "She has the whole package," the Memphis music legend says. "You run across artists all the time that have part of it, but Amy has it all. And it just keeps growing." Dickinson, whose celebrated work as a musician includes classic records with Ry Cooder, Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones (Sticky Fingers) and Bob Dylan, captured Amy and band at his Zebra Ranch recording barn/'art project' in rural Mississippi. "As a producer, you take the artist out to the edge of the cliff, where they have to learn to trust you," Dickinson explains. "And of course, you push 'em off. A lot of them fall. But Amy has the wings to fly. In fact, I think it's one of the best records I've ever made."
