Free Music Notes for Frank

Free Music Review: Quite Frankly
Hit: 5 Stars

Quite frankly I was hesitant to hear a prequel to the outstanding Back to Black, the latter filtered as it were through a more conservative prism. But as it turns out I'm more than happy listening to this cd which sounds even more soulful than the newer issue. I don't think there's a musical instrument out there with the fluent sonorities that come out of Amy's vocal apparatus. She's clearly having fun with the cadential melismas in F** me Pumps, the obsessive regularity of the tune having a dismissive air about it that informs the content. Anyone that can off-handedly rhyme "players" with "say-a" and then "millionaire" proceeding with this syncopted metric scheme throughout the rest of the lyric is clearly having fun, however mordant her wit may be. This is Amy at her most amiable. But the standout song for my taste is "Stronger than Me" showing as she does in general, an incredible vocal range and emotional versatility. The melody here is as strong as its delivery. There's conviction here and all the other songs follow suit. If you loved Back to Black get Frank in more ways than one! Amy is incomparable. Her songs here are different but she delivers them with the same vocal fervor and with even more vocal nuance than her songs on Back to Black.

Free Music Review: a glowing and powerful debut from Amy Winehouse.....
Hit: 5 Stars

Amy, Amy, Amy.....(to quote a song from this album)
FRANK, the debut by the wildly talented Amy Winehouse, released five years ago, is a fusion of 1940s and 1950s jazz/blues and contemporary soul. These songs were released when Ms. Winehouse was nineteen and filled with worldly insight. Yes, most of it's pretty bitter and uncensored accounts of her bad experiences with men, the infamous subjects of her song "F-Me Pumps," who are aging golddiggers, and frank observances about substance abuse and sex.

The band is tight and seamless here. The combination of a soaring horn section, soulful percussion and Amy's sultry vocals make the album as technically brilliant as it is entertaining. I found myself giggling, because her lyrics are just so honest and real! Amy doesn't pull any punches. I particularly love "Amy, Amy, Amy" which is a grand nod to the great jazz and soul bands of the 1930s and 1940s. Damn, that horn is seductive. Also, she penned all of the tunes on this album herself, with the exception of her beautiful, reggae-inspired cover of "Moody's In the Mood For Love." You really can't compare her to anyone! One of a kind.......Brilliant, wonderful and bitingly Music Review: I am glad I purchased Back to Black first
Hit: 5 Stars I first heard of Amy Winehouse like a lot of people in the US did. In the news with nothing but negative comments about her personal life. But when it came to the music I always heard praise on the album. I first heard the single "Rehab" and did not think to much of the song at first. After watching the VMA in Las Vegas I decided to give the album a chance. I was hooked instantly by the soulful sound of Amy Winehouse. It was a voice that I have not heard since the Motown days of music. It seemed like I listened to that album like everyday. Than I actually heard that Frank was her best and debut album. It took me a while to make the choice to purchase the album but when I finally did I could not believe what I was listening to. This was the Amy Winehouse that I felt was missing from the Back to Black album. Eveything worked for her in this album her soulful voice, the classic Motown/lounge style music and mixed with some great lyrics. Back to Black had everything just the music headed more pop than Frank. Her voice did not have as much control as Frank, but the music stuck to it's true form. I say if you listen to Back to Black and liked/loved the album. Frank will blow your socks off...

Free Music Review: Brilliant, Amazing...there aren't enough adjectives
Hit: 5 Stars

Run, don't walk, to get this piece of musical brilliance. Especially if you love Back to Black like I do. And if you don't own either, you MUST get both. Frank is a bit more jazz-funk, as is exemplified by the Intro where Amy scats while accompanied by jazz guitar. Yes there are vocal riffs which might put you in mind of Fitzgerald or other jazz phenoms of a better musical time, but Amy definitely has her own unique amazing sound. She has brought a brilliant fusion of jazz, pop and funk to our time which has been bereft of this kind of sound for far too long. There's never over-production with Amy as there is with so many current popular female singers - even the ones that are truly gifted vocally. Love Amy for her honesty both vocally and lyrically in what she composes.

Not only does it shine musically, this cd is also touched with hints of humor and irony which show that while Amy is a serious singer and composer, she isn't afraid to laugh at herself or at life. Love it.

Free Music Review: Like Billie Holiday...
Hit: 5 Stars

And no, I don't mean her voice. I mean the way you can hear her voice get a little grittier with every drink and drug, just like Billie near the end of her life. Her vibrato was harsh and forced and she couldn't hold the notes like she once could. And I see that happening with Amy...especially when you listen to Frank and then hear her sing Back to Black.

And, no one realizes that there's a song by Amy Winehouse called "Know You Now" and it was originally on this album. It is by far my favorite and NO ONE KNOWS about it. It has a very jazzy tempo and it's really tasty.

In comparison to each other, Frank is way better than Back to Black. In comparison to other artists, Amy Winehouse is better...even when she's at her worst.

Also, the amazon.co.uk reviewer got the song and lyrics WRONG...the song that had the lyrics "you wouldn't want me to be lonely..." is "I Heard Love is Blind" NOT "F*** Me Pumps."
