Free Music Notes for My ChristmasFree Music Review: A spoonful of Bocelli makes the medicine go down Hit: 5 Stars
I generally make a point of avoiding Christmas CD's because the simplicity of most of these melodies makes it virtually impossible to breathe new life into them and over the years they have lost their appeal. After listening to "My Christmas" I realized I had seriously underestimated Bocelli's ability to accomplish the impossible. His renderings of these holiday favorites span an impressive vocal range and coupled with Foster's updated and lush arrangements make them irresistible.
The highlights for me are "Angels we have heard on high" which draws me back time and again. In the duets, the awesome new arrangement of "What child is this" with Ms. Bilge is gorgeous. He has the ability to blend his voice beautifully with whom ever he sings with. His delivery is straightforward and strong with subtle variations while his partners' voices dance around him. He even managed to inflect a little C&W in "Blue Christmas", a great duet with Reba, and that can't have been easy. And hearing him sing with Natalie Cole I was hit with a wave of nostalgia as I'm a huge fan of her father. Listening to Bocelli in many of these songs made me remember the great crooners and balladeers I always enjoyed.
The childhood favorites are amazinginly successful as well! "Jingle Bells" with the muppets is too cute for words and "Santa Claus is coming to town" is almost palatable.
"Oh Tannebaum" is another favorite. I can barely eek out a language and a half and he sounds comfortable with four or five so he gets major points with that one. The "Our Father" and other solos are quite beautiful as well although I really would have prefered the "Oh holy night" in english. "God bless us everyone" is a very fitting ending to a totally enjoyable CD.
If you take your Christmas medicine in small doses, this is the CD for you!
Free Music Review: A CLASSIC CD by a very classic singer: Bocelli Hit: 5 Stars
Make this your Christmas CD of the year.
What a powerful collection of popular, classical, & hymn forms of Christmas music.
This will be a keeper handed down to the next generation.
White Christmas, taken from the movie "White Christmas", may well be done even better than the Bing version. That's an opinion, but trust me, it is good. This version is just as Classy as the Classic by Crosby.
That song opens the CD. Even better is the closing song. The ending song, "God Bless Us Everyone", is taken from the new movie, "A Christmas Carol" (I watched this Disney film on its opening day, also worth 5 stars). The song is at the end, using the words of Tiny Tim as it's title but the sentiment of forgiveness, family, giving, and the true spirit of Christmas as it's theme. What delightful words, what compelling music, and what a delicious voice, coming from Andrea Bocelli. Sticking my neck out once again, I predict that this song, as done by Bocelli, will become a Christmas Classic song in it's own right, in the years ahead, as will the movie that it comes from.
But the opening and closing classic songs in this CD collection are just the alpha and omega of a selection of Christmas favorites that are performed here in a festive, classical, and enchanting musical form. It's also fun to have some of the old favorites done in a language other than English. A Christmas season will never be quite the same after spending a few hours of it with Andrea Bocelli and this holiday first.
Here's a stocking stuffer idea. Better yet, send it as a "special" Christmas card about Thanksgiving time, so your giftee will be able to enjoy the music all season.
Free Music Review: This is beautiful holiday music from Andrea Hit: 5 Stars
Andrea Bocelli is simply one of the best singers in the world today. This music is beautiful. My favorite tracks are the lesser known tunes on here. I love the song "Caro Gesu Bambino". This song is an Italian lullaby for a small boy. "I Believe" is another song I have never heard of before. This is a song about the hope for peace in the world. Katherine Jenkins duets with Andrea on this song. She has a beautiful voice. "God Bless Us Everyone" is another new song for me. This song is very uplifting. Andrea chooses an unusual duet partner in Mary J. Blige on the song "What Child Is This". Mary has a strong voice. This song is very moving, and this one of the highlights on the disc. Andrea duets with the Muppets on "Jingle Bells". They are another unusual choice for a duet partner, but this song sounds pretty good Andrea hits the high notes on "Oh Tannenbaum". He sings this song part in English and Italian. This track proves that he sing equally well in Italian and English. "Blue Christmas" is a very pretty duet featuring country super star Reba McEntire. I like the romantic sentiment on this song.
Andrea sings the Christmas standard "Silent Night" in Italian. His version of this song is excellent. "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" is a light and fun song with kids singing on the track. My Christmas is a pleasant listen.
Free Music Review: Absolutely Wonderful ALL the Way Hit: 5 Stars
When I see the combination of Bocelli and Foster together on an album or whatever, I know that it is going to be one beautiful piece of music. This time we received a whole album of the very best music for Christmas.
A few weeks ago our PBS station carried the Foster special and it was beautiful. We said that when anymore Foster works appear we will buy them for the simple reason of the beauty of the arrangements and ear for perfection. Then when Bocelli sings it is as if he is in the room singing to a small group of eager listeners. I could not believe how our emotions roared when he started singing "The Lords Prayer." Can you imagine two old curmudgeons sitting in front of a bunch of speakers crying like babies? That was us and we don't mind saying so. It happened on the several other times that we heard the album.
Bocelli's pitch and resonance are as clear as a bell made the old way. One thing that struck me as odd was the absence of any fancy audio gizmos such as Dolby 5.1, etc. The CD did not need them but I can only imagine how much better the CD would be in SACD or better. Regardless, this is still one kicking CD. Merry Christmas. Can you imagine what our friends thought when we told them we were listening to Christmas music on Nov 3rd instead of listening to voting results.
Free Music Review: Bocelli is Simply Stellar Hit: 5 Stars
Andrea Bocelli's voice is absolute magic but before purchasing this CD I wondered how he would sound while singing "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and "Jingle Bells." Yes, even those silly songs sound just fine. But, some of the selections absolutely soar - they take your breath away. The duet with Mary J. Bilge on "What Child is This" is simply glorious. The duets with Natalie Cole on "The Christmas Song" and Reba McEntire on "Blue Christmas" both sound great, although like the Muppets pairing, the one with McEntire, on paper, sounds a bit like oil and water, but somehow everything works.
On "Oh Tannenbaum" and "Silent Night" the angelic addition of the Salvation Army Boy's Choir provides just the right touch. And, Bocelli's flute solos on "Oh Tannenbaum" and "I Believe" are lovely. Favorites are "White Christmas", "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Cantique de Noel" and "Adeste Fideles" -- all are stellar performances.
What a special CD from beginning to end. Beautifully arranged by David Foster and accompanied on many of the selections by an interesting array of artists. If you love Christmas music or are simply seeking a way to get into the spirit of the holiday season, this CD is worth every penny.
