Free Music Notes for Armchair Apocrypha AlbumFree Music Review: sit yourself down for an armchair apocrypha Hit: 5 StarsArmchair Apocrypha differs quite a lot from its predecessor. For a start, it's guitar driven rather than the former album's more eccentric and violin based approach. It sounds cohesive, consistent and compelling. The first song Fiery Crash is reminiscent of Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and the lyrics also seem to tie in with the apocalyptic mood of that album. I was able to listen to the entire album from start to finish and then over again without it losing my attention. Much has been made of the brilliance of his lyrics and they are really interesting but it does sound like he just likes to have a bit of fun with them as well. A dictionary meaning of apocrypha is "writings or statements of dubious authenticity" which could possibly be construed as Andrew Bird being humorously self-deprecatory. There's some vibrant imagery in his writing, highlighted by some lines from Armchairs "these looms that weave apocryphal/they're hanging from a strand/these dark and empty rooms were full/of incandescent hands". My favourite song is Plasticities. It's a great melody but the words are what caught my attention; "We'll fight/we'll fight for your music halls and dying cities/They'll fight/They'll fight for your neural walls and plastic cities/and precious territory/precious territory" The image is powerful and captures an underlying sense of foreboding that highlights the serious side of Andrew Birds. "Weather Systems" is a phrase that pops up on both albums that precede this one, and the meaning appears to rest in the idea that men will attempt to own everything they possibly can for pride or profit, and how they would harness and own the weather systems of the earth -if only they could. The inference seems to be that perhaps one day they might and that's where the darker side of Andrew Bird's lyrics appear to lead. Its a thought that is rooted in a sinister reality. In Imitosis, he asks the question "and why do some show no mercy/while others are painfully shy". Bob Dylan, on 'Slow Train Coming' claims that "the weak are consumed by the strong" and he seems to be coming at the same "truth" from another perspective. That Andrew Bird appears to subconsciously plough the same soil and then intersect with Dylan might help to underline how curiously penetrating Andrew Bird's writing can be. He seems to have grasped something of the machinations of man, how it all holds together; the systems, maps and rules of travel and he appears to be able to ride along with that mysterious zeitgeist, the steady breeze that blows through our times. This was my favourite release of 2007 and one year on I still love it. The Mysterious Production of Eggs was my favourite of 2005. Both are very highly recommended.
