Free Music Notes for Whistle Down The Wind (1998 Original London Cast)Free Music Review: Open The Vaults Of Heaven-- This Musical is HEAVENLY Hit: 5 Stars
"Whistle Down The Wind" sadly is forgotten among Andrew Llyod Webber's works but is probably the best piece he has ever done. The songs are simply increadiable- honestly it is HARD to find a bad track on this C.D. While, the story is a little dry from time to time- the beautiful lyrics and rock-powered music more than, make up for that.
The musical is all about salvation, beliefs, and friendship. The songs "When Children Rule The World", "Whistle Down The Wind", "Vaults Of Heaven", and "Tiretracks and Broken Hearts" stand out as among the best songs.
The musical overall contains some of the most emotionally driven songs I've ever heard. The lyrics from the songs "Whistle Down The Wind" and "Vaults Of Heaven" are very profound which make this musical worth listening too.
Listening to this C.D. It made me miss the dramatic Broadway musical and the musical that speaks to you in a profound. All in all this is a good buy and a beautiful piece of music to own.
Free Music Review: AMAZING! Hit: 5 Stars
Alright, the thing that bugged ...me when I first heard this musical is the bad southern accents. Makes you want to pull your hair out. If it wasn't for the AMAZING music, I probably would not have given it a second listen. After the second or third listen, the accents become more and more bearable. Then without warning, it starts to sound just right. Anyway, besides the accents, this has got to be on the top 3 of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals. "Phantom of the Opera" and "Evita" (movie version) are the other two. The music is very catchy and brings tears to your eyes, the same time it makes you smile with the perfect dissanant harmonies. My favorite songs are, "Tire Tracks and Broken Hearts" and "A Kiss is a Terrible Thing to Waste." Makes you want to jump up and sing your lungs out. This is a great, great, great, great musical and you need to reward yourself by listening to this masterpiece. Andrew, please do more like this....please.
Free Music Review: London's gain will be Broadway's loss Hit: 5 Stars
Just returned from a trip to London and was honored to attend a performance of "Whistlle Down the Wind". I had been following it's dubious progress here in ths US, but as with many others reviewing this album, had heard some of the songs on the ALW Royal Albert Hall celebration, and was enthralled. This is a beautiful musical, with a wonderfully melodic score. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and enjoy the CD every chance I get. Yes, the production has some minor flaws, but not anything that could not be fine tuned for a broadway run, with American actors minus British accents! Unfortunately, this is a theatrical gem that will be lost to American theater lovers not able to cough up the cost of a trip to London. I spoke with folks at the theater in London who advised that this show will be closing it's London run in April, and there are NO plans to bring it to Broadway. What a shame, and what a loss.
Free Music Review: Webber scores a BIG HIT! Hit: 5 Stars
I first got WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND as a surprise present in the mail from friends in London. I knew nothing of the show at the time, and had been anticipating it for months. WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND quickly became my second favorite musical after LES MISERABLES, because of the beautiful music, story and characters. The accents are not bad at all. I don't even notice them because the score and lyrics are marvelous. There are many gem numbers in this show, the are: A KISS IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE, IF ONLY, WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND, TRY NOT TO BE AFRIAD, VAULTS OF HEAVEN, WE'RE LONG OVERDUE FOR A MIRACLE, WHEN CHILDREN RULE THE WORLD, NO MATTER WHAT, UNSETTLED SCORES, and NATURE OF THE BEAST. I guess it can be said that I LOVE the whole show- it grows on me more and more with each listen, and still four months after I got the package-I listen to it daily. It's miraculous.
Free Music Review: Oh c'mon! Hit: 5 Stars
Yes the attempts of English actors to get down southern drawl can be minorly distracting but that and nothing else could distract from the eclectic and lovely score by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman. The title track is a haunting melody joined by rock ballads "Tire Tracks and Broken Hearts", "Cold", and "A Kiss is a Terrible Thing to Waste", colorful children songs "Long Overdue for a Miracle" and "When Children Rule the World", and the absolutely joyous hymnal "Vaults of Heaven". I hope this comes to Broadway soon and, more importantly, that critics see it's charm and appeal so the American audience can enjoy it the way they are on the West End right now. I urge you to go buy this and then see it when it comes to Broadway.
