Andy Leftwich is one gifted and talented individual.
I recently went to a concert featuring Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder and found myself drawn to Andy's fiddle music even when he wasn't soloing. He is just good, real good!
What I like most about his first solo effort is that there is a lot of original material. Andy is not just a great player, he's a good writer as well.
The only aspect of this album that bothers me just a little is the production. I feel that the instruments are mixed too "evenly" even when soloing. This takes some of the edge and zing off the solo breaks. I find myself looking for some knobs to turn up that mandolin or guitar. But please don't let this one minor personal preference dissuade you from purchasing this fine CD.
And by the way, did I mention mandolin? Andy is not just a fiddle player, he covers mandolin extremely well also. In fact, I'd like to hear more of his mandolin playing, just perhaps a little hotter in the mix ... :-) And speaking of hot, the band is on this one. I like the fact that Ride does not come across as just an Andy Leftwich showcase. Andy was aiming for a total band effort and it comes across well.
Overall a worthy edition to any serious Bluegrass fans' collection. And as one last but not least observation, as good as Andy is in the musical department, I must point out that I am most impressed with his outspoken faith in the Lord. After the music is long gone, this will forever remain.
