Free Music Notes for AngelfishFree Music Review: Obscure, But Superb Hit: 5 Stars
Little-known album by the little-known Angelfish, which is nonetheless one of the best bands of the 90's.
I'm not that fond of "Suffocate Me", a *serious* downer song, but there are many high points:
"King of the World" is catchy even though it seems to be sung with a certain Scottish sullenness! It is the nearest thing you will find to an upbeat song on this very dark album.
"The Sun Won't Shine" creates majestic sonic and emotional space... fine turns and touches.
"Mummy Can't Drive" has plenty of drive, building through the end with hair-raising goth breaks!
"Tomorrow Forever" is a sad, somewhat bitter goodbye song, which then decides to cut loose with a rip and rocks out the door.
"You Can Love Her" is a magnificent cover of Holly Beth Vincent's great masterpiece, and Shirley does some of her best work on this deep, powerful song.
Free Music Review: "Some things just carry on like you..." Hit: 5 Stars
Shirley Manson's first band Angelfish is a great, fun disc. But thank god Shirley moved on to front my favorite band in the galaxy, Garbage. Angelfish is not a horrible band, just not as good as Garbage. Shirley's voice is sexy, haunting, and earth-shattering on this record. Standout tracks include: Suffocate Me, Sleep with Me, The Sun Won't Shine, You Can Love Her, Tomorrow Forever, and The End. The rest of the tracks are great as well of course there is always at least one dud on an album and that song is King of the World. It's a good thing this album is cool because I did not know what to expect, I just knew Shirley was the lead singer of this band (I love her voice so much!) The lyrics are surprisely good even though Shirley admitted she didn't write one song on this album, anyways I highly recommend checking this pre-Garbage disc out, you can't go wrong with that voice, rock on Shirley!
Free Music Review: This is a GREAT CD! Hit: 5 Stars
I came across this album listing while looking for other CDs. When I saw that Shirley Manson was the lead singer of this band, I knew that I had to listen to a few tracks. I was blown away by what I heard, of course I am biased because I love Shirley as a vocalist. Keep in mind that Angelfish and Garbage are two different types of music. Nonetheless, I love both group's albums. Some of the best songs on Angelfish's album are "You Can Love Her", "Sleep with Me", "Suffocate Me", "Heartbreak to Hate", and my personal favorite "King of the World." Shirley reminds me of Deborah Harry (Blondie) when she belts out this tune. Make no mistake that all ten songs on this album make it worth purchasing.
Free Music Review: Shirley was just as good before Garbage! Hit: 5 Stars
I love Garbage and now I love Angelfish though they only have one album out and have broken up. I first found about Angelfish on this cool site about Shirley Manson (go to yahoo.com and in the search space type "Shirley Manson" the site will be called Greenday vs. Shirley Manson). I must admire Shirley's talent to sound like Deborah Harry of Blondie on "King of the World". And she just sounds plain cool on "Suffocate Me". Her ability to sound different shows on this album. If you like Garbage just one bit, you should get this album Note: I don't think the album's sold in any music stores any more. It's best to get it over the I-net if your interested.
Free Music Review: Highly Underrated Hit: 5 Stars
I spotted this CD in a bargain section of my local CD store. Well, being the fan of Garbage that I am I immediately purchased it. I was expecting something like, Garbage, the sequel.
What I got was a gothy, dark mix of almost garage rock. Shirley's voice shines on "You Can Love Her", "King of the World", "Heartbreak to Hate" and "Suffocate Me". If you'd like to see the good tracks on this CD, just read the track list.
Now, this CD may not be everyone's favorite work by Shirley Manson, but its still a great CD by a great, if shortlived, band.
