This is a sometimes wonderful accomplishment, like the film itself. However, like the film itself, it has several places where it seems that Lynch/Badalmenti are really running out of ideas. I love the main theme song. It's Badalamenti's best work since the theme for "Twin Peaks-Fire Walk With Me" (which I think is Lynch's best soundtrack still). The rest is strickly the gloom & doom that has always been Lynch's bread & butter. Almost every track is as menacing and seductive as anything Lynch & co have produced. 2 b honest, I really couldn't distinguish one track from another after a while. This is why I'm glad 4 the doo-wop and guitar stuff from the upcoming album "Blue Bob." Even the theme song sounds a bit dated compared to, say, the original sythesizer masterworks like the original "Twin Peaks" theme song. Like everyone else, I think "Llorando" is the best track on this collection. It's so abstract and emotional and even provides a theme 2 the movie (if a David Lynch film CAN have a theme, it's the closest it's ever come.) I am a big collector of Lynch's other soundtracks. I am so glad Lynch didn't think of hiring some bigshot badboy producer like he did with Trent Reznor for "Lost Highway" that produced the abrasive and annoying soundtrack for it. I HATED that soundtrack, even though it made the film actually feel like it had a point (which I really didn't feel it have). Unfortunitely, so many moments on this collection completely RIP-OFF that collection. Track #3, 4 instance, is a complete repeat of the track "Fred & Renee Make Love" from "LH" (thankfully without Balthazar Getty and Patricia Arquette's annoying voices and a terrible Marilyn Manson (who, thank god, isn't in this film like he was supposed 2 b if the pilot had been picked up by ABC) song following). I also heard some of "Night Streets" from "Blue Velvet" mixed in. "Mountains Falling" (a disturbing techno track that serves as lesbian lust muzik in the film) sounds like a bad sequel 2 the very popular Barry Adamson track, "Something Wicked This Way Comes" from "LH." I also wish the tracks "Jitterbug" and "Dinner Party Pool Music" had been lengthened as they are some of the more defining tracks on this collection. The darker stuff sounds so mundane and familar. This is probably going 2 go down as one of Lynch's best films so the last thing he should be right now is b ORDINARY. I do wish Lynch would stick 2 directing, though. His guitar work is appreciated, but it really isn't his strong suit. I loved his compositions for the "FWWM" soundtrack, but the magic isn't here this time. Overall, this an excellant but not-as-strange-as-they-think collection that should (finally) nab Badalamenti and Lynch some much deserved OSCAR nods (and hopefully wins). I haven't heard a better score so far this year and I doubt I will in the next two monthes. The final grumble I have is that Lynch didn't try and revive Billy Ray Cyrus' career by having him sing a cover of Chris Issak's "Wicked Games" (which was in "Wild At Heart, in case you've 4gotten).

ORIGINAL MUSICAL SCORE.Director David Lynch's affection for kitschy lounge music and emotionally overwrought mid-century pop has long since proven to be more than trend or irony; indeed, it's often the uneasy spiritual axis of his films. The soundtrack of Mulholland Dr. turns on the usual Lynchian motifs (the brooding atmosphere of Angelo Badalamenti's ominous synth-and-orchestra cues tossed with a dash of Lynch's own off-center compositions), yet manages to evoke a sense of foreboding that's distinctly its own. Badalamenti leads off with a curve, the nervous orchestra swing-romp "Jitterbug," before descending into a dark soundscape that becomes murkier and more avant-goth at every turn. Bubbling through that morass are pop nuggets variously cheesy (Dave Cavanaugh's lounge-ready "The Beast"), lugubriously bluesy (Sonny Boy Williamson's take on Willie Dixon's "Bring It On Home"), and alternately innocent ("I've Told Every Little Star") and liturgical ("Llorando"). Three tracks of the director's own (cowritten with John Neff) skulking Lounge Music from Hell ratchet up the tension even further; it's the perfect garnish for this darkly delicious film-music cocktail. --Jerry McCulley
