When Twin Peaks first aired back in 1990, I would NEVER have watched it had it not been for the MUSIC. I never was very much into network television and Twin Peaks seemed like just another network's lame attempt to rake in a few bucks with a new "murder/mystery miniseries". I promptly dismissed the show.
A couple of months later, I heard the main title theme on a local jazz radio station. I was mesmerized! I decided to give the show a try and I was absolutely hooked. The story, actors, cinematography, music and locale all combined to create a truly unique and ground-breaking television show.
I purchased the first soundtrack in 1990 and wore it out. The themes were truly memorable and Angelo Badalamenti's genious shines through in every song. Of course, it was an incomplete documentation of the music of Twin Peaks, but it was a good start. Never had I dreamed I would have to wait 18 years for volume 2 (amazing how the show has maintained a loyal following for so long - PROOF of what an incredible show it really was).
Volume 2, although brilliant, is sadly incomplete. There is SO much more music from the world of Twin Peaks that was tragically overlooked; numerous variations of the main title theme (especially the acoustic guitar version that segues into a Rhodes piano - played when Ben Horne is watching black-and-white movies of the ground breaking ceremony of the Great Northern), Hank Jennings' theme, John Wheeler's theme, a '50s-style guitar jam (first played when James leaves Twin Peaks and is riding his Harley down the highway) and many, many others. I just hope I don't have to wait another 18 years for volume 3.
Recommended for any music lover, although this will probably appeal mostly to lovers of the show.
Twin Peaks: All New Season Two Music Poster
While the first Twin Peaks soundtrack was fairly accessible, thanks to its gothic noir-pop atmosphere (and its three Julee Cruise songs), this CD feels a little more hermetic. Its dark charms take longer to take hold, but they're there, all right. A reworking of the show's famous love theme opens the proceedings, and after that the album slowly builds up a unique 1950s-influenced atmosphere, sexy in a vaguely scary way. Composer Angelo Badalamenti easily moves from warped takes on Americana ("High School Swing") to blues ("Drug Deal Blues"), from laidback jazz ("Josie and Truman") to lascivious grind ("Blue Frank"). Stars Sheryl Lee and Lara Flynn Boyle contribute vocals to "Just You" (lyrics by David Lynch), possibly one of the creepiest love ballads ever recorded.
