Free Music Review: An Amazing and Emotional Record
Hit: 5 Stars

Ok, everyone is probably wondering why this record has gotten 5 stars from me when most of the people on here have gave it 4 stars or lower. Well, I'll tell you. You need to just listen to the music, forget all the hype, and forget that Tom Delonge from Blink 182 is in it. Just think of the music and the incredible feeling you get out of each song. This was a very surprising album for me and is one of the greatest things I have ever got the privelage of listening to. From start to finish, Tom and the gang gives you everything from slow emotional songs to hard heavy hitting uplifting songs. Yes, it does have that certain sound of U2 but AVA is a totally different band. Also, to the people who have gave this surprising low ratings and not liking the album, I'd recommend listening to the album more than once before you just say it sucks. You have to get into the songs and understand the meaning and what Tom is trying to achieve. If you do that, then you can say whatever you want. So anyways, I'm gonna do that really cliche rating system of the songs just to break them down and easily explain the album more to people who want to hear something they rarely hear in the music world today:

Valkyrie Missle - I see this as an intro song to everything you are going to hear in the record after it. It really gets you into the sound and feel of everything. It's got a huge two minute intro that makes you feel like something inside you is opening up and ready for something great. Then it gets to Tom saying "Everyone, Everyone will listen...". Great opening song for a great album. (I'm not gonna rate each song individually because the album is 5 stars and the songs I feel are all perfect)

Distraction - Opens up to a great trance like keyboard and goes right into the chorus. I thought the chorus is a little weak compared to the rest of the songs but the verses and other parts of the song GREATLY make up for it. Tom's voice really gets you into the song.

Do It For Me Now - The music is awesome on this song and the chorus is the strongest so far in the album. Awesome song and it gets you ready for a strong song coming up.

The Adventure - First single from AVA and it truely is one of the strongest songs Tom has ever made. This one has a pretty long intro and outro. The hooks are very catchy and the vocal melodies are one of a kind. This song has the peaceful feel that most of the rest of the album has. It ends with an amazing outro of keyboards and guitars that have that U2 feel. Everytime I hear it I just picture in my head that I'm flying. Very awesome song.

A Little's Enough - Woah, a slow song. And a very very good one at that. Very emotional and catchy chorus and verses. I love this song and again it has a softer feel that the rest of the album has.

The War - A very AMAZING song. It's very uplifting and it's the hardest song that AVA offers. And the only one with a distorted guitar riff. The drums make the song feel like an army is marching. And Tom's "Oh's" make this song a very strong standout track

The Gift - Another song that is just very amazing all the way through and contains Tom's catchy "oh's". The chorus makes the song stand out.

It Hurts - Awesome guitar intro. It might sound wierd on the first listen but it grows on you and it becomes VERY catchy. Lots of people say that when Tom repeats "It Hurts, It Hurts" it sounds annoying. And it does not, I actually like when he does that. The whole song is incredible.

Good Day - This might be my favorite track even though it's very hard to find a favorite on this seeing that every song is amazing. Probably the most relaxing song and it gives you a very good feeling. Again Tom does his "oh's" and they are very emotional. I can see this as AVA's next single. Very AWESOME song.

Start The Machine - Opens up with a soft, relaxing, peaceful riff of a little toy keyboard. And then it goes into the verses and Tom takes you to the end of this awesome album with his very catchy chorus. The song ends with the little toy keyboard playing. It ends on a peaceful note and makes you want to listen to the album again.

The album is so good that it just goes by so fast. And it makes you want to listen to it again and again. Every song gets stuck in your head and it's an album that makes you feel alive again. So I am very proud of Tom and his new band, and the album was well worth the wait and the buy. So, if you have an open mind, and want to feel in ways you never have before, then pick this up!!

Free Music Review: Solid CD
Hit: 5 Stars

Blink-182 changed continously throughout it's band-life. But not until Enema of the State did they to me make a bigger change. They turned somewhat "poppy" and had real good songs. In Take off your Pants and Jacket, they started to turn more "Rock", and it turned out to be my favorite CD. But in their final album ( Titled Blink-182? ) they turned really "emo", depressing, somewhat gothic.. but I still liked that, too. But when they broke up, or went on an "indefinite hiatius", I was pretty shocked, since Tom and Mark were "best friends".

In Angels and Airwaves (AvA) Tom takes on a more serious and loving side without his former bandmates Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus. Angels and Airwaves consists of Box Car Racer guitarist David Kennedy, former Distillers bassist Ryan Sinn, and the drummer Atom Willard, best known as former drummer for The Offspring. With a great group of guys like this, you'd expect a great cd, and that is exactly what you get. Tom said it would change the world.. it hasn't. I think he was just feeling good that day. :P. Here's my review.

Valkyrie Missle: 10/10. This has got to be my favorite track on the entire album. The intro is a long two minutes and forty seconds, a riff doesn't start until a minute or so into it, and tempo doesn't change until a minute thirty. I loved the lyrics though, and Tom's voice makes it a much better song. I'm hoping this is AvA's next single. This is my favorite on the album I'd say.

Distraction: 9/10. Starts out with a less than lengthy intro than Valkyrie Missle ( This one is a minute and nine seconds ) and the lyrics are pretty repetetive, but I just like this song. And like I will say continously about these songs, Tom's voice makes it better better better.

Do It For Me Now: 8.5/10. Only a thirty six second intro (probably the shortest) and a solid song, but it's really nothing too special.

The Adventure: 9.5/10. If anyone's heard about AvA and heard one song, they've most likely heard this one. It's AvA's first single. It's one minute thirty second intro is pretty repetetive, but it picks up as soon as Tom starts singing. Good lyrics, nice quick paced beat... I've just heard this song too many times.

A Little's Enough: 9/10. One of the slower paced songs on the album, but it's still good. Not the best song, but it surely is a good one with pretty good lyrics.

The War: 9.5/10. I love the main riff. Good lyrics, which mainly talk about, you probably guessed it... war. The best thign about this song though is definitely the guitar work though. But that plus Tom's voice equals magic. Very good song.

The Gift: 9.5/10. This may very well be the first AvA song I heard because I downloaded it. Great lyrics, and OF COURSE, great vocals from Tom make this one of the best on the album in my opinion.

It Hurts: 8.5/10. The main thing said in this song is "It Hurts" ... several times ... and it really stays the same tempo throughout the whole song. This is one of the worst on the album to me.

Good Day: 9.5/10. I loved Tom's vocals in this song. The lyrics are like most songs, just about "oo baby I love you... mmm don't dump me." But it's still good.

Start The Machine: 8.5/10. Slower paced song the whole song, really, and a really "peaceful" way to end the album.

AvA seems very much to me like a more modern U2 for some reason. Slow paced, meaningful lyrics, and just overall great stuff. The only thing AvA needs to work on is how long their intros are and closes. Many times it would seem as if a song was over, and it just kept on going and repeating the same line over and over. The lyrics also get repetetive sometimes. Anyway, I sincerely hope this band doesn't split now. Stay together, Angels and Airwaves. Stay together, for the kids.

We Don't Need to Whisper definitely deserves a:

9.6/10

You absolutely must buy this CD.

Free Music Review: Music is Fun Again!
Hit: 5 Stars

After being a fan of Blink 182 for a number of years (since my high school days), I was eager to hear how Tom DeLonge's newest project would turn out. I enjoyed his music during his tenure with Boxcar Racer with former Blink drummer Travis Barker; namely "Letters to God", "There Is", and "Watch the World". I felt it gave Tom a chance to grow and further develop as a musician and a songwriter. Needless to say, I was truly looking forward to listening to Angels and Airwaves' debut album. I was not to be disappointed.

Let me start by discussing the tone of the lyrics. This is in its entirety, one of the most positive and uplifting albums you will hear these days. That alone gives this album a sort of transcendant power that will ensure its listenability for years to come. Tom creates in his listener a feeling of romance with life and the world. He chooses to try to see the good and what is fundamentally right in any situation. In "Distrcation" he seems to be telling someone he loves that even though the world can be an ugly place somtimes, he "will be your distraction". It paints a picture for me that even though things can look belak and others can disappoint, each one of us can still be that one person who is someone else's world and vice versa.

"The Adventure" was the song that brought me into the fold initially. This song made me feel it is alright to be a dreamer again and to believe that anything is possible. I picture being on the brink of something special and that eeling of pure joy that you get when you know nothing can go wrong or stand in your way. This song feels like an anthem in every sense. This is the song you rock out to with the windows down in your car on a warm summer night. The driving guitar rhythems power the song along with a hint of an ambient feelmixed in towards the beginning and end. The guitar riffs are simply captivating.

"Valkyrie Missile" begins the album with a bang and with its simulated radio transmissions announcing who the band is in the very beginning. The listener can sense that something special is getting underway. The bass riffs to open, followed by rising and falling guitar melodies create a building effect and by this time I wished the song would go on forever. The song speaks of trying to stand tall in the face of adversity, with the help of someone special.

"Good Day" is a slow to mid-tempo song with a beautiful melody and hook. It creates a portrait of pure love and the joy and almost disbelief of finding and experiencing this brand of love. This is illustrated by the lyrics, "I think I like today, I think it's good, it's something I can't get my head around". Truly fundamental and honest feelings are portrayed in this song, and the listener can feel them as if they themselves are the ones experiencing them.

"Start the Machine" closes out th ealbum and includes an apparent xylophone accompaniment! Another gorgeous mid-tempo track, it is a wonderful way to close out this incredible debut effort from Angels and Airwaves.

Angels and Airwaves wildly exceeds even the most optimistic expectation with "We Don't Have to Whisper". A masterful combination of soaring anthmes and well-composed and properly mixed mid-tempo tracks, I would recomment this album to any fan of polished alternative rock music; really any fan of rock music in general. Tom DeLonge has come a long way from those days of playing garage punk music in the San Diego area. This is an album Tom, the rest of the band, and their ever-multiplying fan base can truly be proud of.

Free Music Review: most beautiful sound i've heard in YEARS
Hit: 5 Stars

it's hard for me to describe how exciting Angels and Airwaves is for me... and i think that only someone who truly appreciates music (of this kind) will be able to relate... and i don't mean that in any condescending way...

it's not just the songs...it's the whole theme if you will... they have this mood creation approach... like Tom (lead singer) said, he imagined people listening to the album in its entirety in a dark room with a single lit candle or something...

the album focuses on a theme of the best and worst that we as humans can do... one is war and the other is love... and how ironically these can exist simultaneously worldwide... and not just in a violent world-war destructive type of way, but in a interpersonal relationship and emotional destruction sort of way... via society as a whole maybe... and how love can heal and span space and time.... also of worldwide and interpersonal magnitude.... Tom said the cover of the album is a picture to show the "infinite potential of a human being" .... "we don't need to whisper"....

anyways, what i'm getting at is that THEY'RE AMAZING! ok seriously though... maybe it's just me because i grew up listening to more focus-driven-progressive-minded music if you will... again, no condescending going on here... and what i mean to say is that you just don't get that sort of approach to things anymore.... and Angels and Airwaves is doing a fine job so far, i think! it's just beautiful... i can't describe in words the sounds, you know? you really do need to just sit in a dark room with a candle and listen to the whole album... but then you'd be missing out on all the cool WWII footage they incorporated into the film they made for the album! haha...

they certainly can't be compared to any other band out there today... they have a unique sound in the sense that they are drawing on a sound that spans decades now... it's almost just as if Tom took a little of the Cure, the Police, U2, and maybe even Pink Floyd and put them in a blender with his own little modern twist on it... the guitar work is in a word; beautiful...

enough of me drooling over this band, eh? i just wanted to end with a bit from an interview with Tom DeLonge himself , and, if you know me, you might catch the meaning at the end there... and the irony of my love for this band is that when i first got into them, i was in a very potentially stable and positive place (you know...), and i felt empowered to grow and just enjoy the positivity and infinite potential there... and then i went through some dark times and that particular stability left me faltered... i thought i could never feel the metaphoric light i felt when listening to this album again... but i did!! and that adds to the testament of positivity the album conveys... and to how humans don't give ourselves enough inner-strength-credit.... and i know i'm still in that dark place sometimes, but this album definitely inspires my daily life...

oh, did i mention that you should listen to it? haha...

Free Music Review: Simply Amazing!
Hit: 5 Stars

Being a huge Blink-182 fan, I was one of the few it seems that really liked the last Blink album and the direction the band was heading with their more mature sound. So when the band decided to take an indefinite break, I was very disappointed to say the least, as if they faltered just when it seemed that they were hitting their prime. Then came Tom's much anticipated effort with a new lineup. I have to admit going in with some skepticism, being that I felt pretty strongly that Mark and Travis were too intrical and talented members of a great band to replace so easily since Mark's powerful basslines and Travis' crushing drums were such distinguishing hallmarks of Blink's successful sound. But with all due respect to those two individuals, boy I couldn't have been more wrong. Not only did Tom's new direction pick up right where Blink left off, but it reached a level that I'm not sure Blink could ever gotten to as it would've been too much of a departure from their previous sound. This is simply one of the best albums I have ever heard and blows away any previous albums Blink has ever done. Now I know some are saying that AvA's sound is too reminiscent of U2, The Cure, and other '80's bands to stand on it's own. However, in my humble opinion I couldn't disagree more. While there are similarities to albums such as the Joshua Tree in terms of the scale of the songs, no one today is even coming close to touching the commitment to excellence in writing. Tom and his new mates set out to make an alblum not with just a couple of hit singles and a bunch of filler, but instead wrote every song as if it was to go on an eventual greatest hits album. Each song not only stands alone in it's brillance, but together form an entire concept album full of themes of love, war, loss, hope, and space. There is simply no weak link on this album.

Valkrie's Missile, Do It For Me Now, The Adventure, The Gift, and The War are my favorites, but it's really hard to rank them above the rest because all are excellent. The perfect blend of rock, synth, lyrics, and production, "We Don't Need To Whisper" is an alblum that will stand the test of time and become a cult classic whether or not it reaches the commercial success of an album like the Joshua Tree. Now no review would be complete without a little criticism and if there is one to offer it is this: There are times when Tom's sophomoric/teen-sounding voice doesn't quite fit AvA's more mature sound and lyrics. You almost wonder if he will still sound this way as he approaches middle age. But having accepted this long ago, one can overcome this slight annoyance because of how amazing this alblum is. So don't hesitate to purchase it. It will be one that you will enjoy for years to come. AvA is my new favorite band and after listening to this album, I'm confident you will become a fan too. I already cant wait to see them live and look forward to more AvA in years to come. Way to go boys!
