Free Music Review: Underrated Landmark of Progressive Metal
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the most solid progressive metal album I've heard out of tens of prog metal bands worldwide. Angra is known worldwide but takes a completely different approach to the struggling Dream Theater rehashing themes and concepts of the 1970s. Angra brings an entirely new voice into progressive metal. The closest in terms of awesomeness to these guys are Amorphis' "Skyforger" for guitar work and Scar Symmetry's "Holographic Universe" for creative themes. Dream Theater cannot touch Temple of Shadows for multiple reasons.

The album takes place at the peak of the Crusades with clashing faiths in Judaism, Islam, and Christianity about a character named the Shadow Hunter. We follow him through his life through tragedies and him questioning his faith and what the point of religion is if it's used against the people for warfare. God cannot provide all the answers for him but not having all the answers and living one's best is what he learns is the meaning of life. Religion is perfectly fine but politically it can be turned against the people. People can choose to love and get along with one another by choice regardless of different faiths. It's a dark and creative story that you can listen to over and over comparable to masterpieces in film.

Wimpy DT fanboys stop whining about speed and heaviness as that's what metal is truly about (I love DT and go to their concerts but they're a joke compared to Angra). There's so much more going on in this album than most realize and you'll have to listen to it a few times over. Angra has brought in power metal with symphonic elements, their own Brazilian cultural influences into their works with acoustic works similar of that in the Spanish flamenco music (Even though Brazil is Portuguese based), and percussion. The use of unusual time signatures adds a lot of fun while shifting from aggressive moods to soft ones being well balanced. Each song is broken into chapters for the Shadow Hunter with a revelation in philosophy of religion with him or a turning point in the story. Highlights include "Angels and Demons", "The Temple of Hate", "Morning Star", and "Wishing Well".

You can expect guitar battles with Rafael and Kiko in which they're nowhere near as dreaded and uncreative as the British speed/power metal band Dragonforce rehashing the same lyrical content and finger tapping. These guys were before Dragonforce were even around with this album multiplatinuming worldwide a few times already! The percussion compares to Mike Portnoy easily and Edu Falaschi is highly influenced by legendary Dio from Black Sabbath suiting well with power metal elements. And the bass does have presence unlike DT with Myun just as silent as the bass track in their albums as in concerts as Felipe is a badass.

For those looking for philosophy and tired of the rehashed 1970 themes of Dream Theater while looking for something heavy then get this album. DT fanboys do not know what they're talking about and are hostile towards anything that's creative. People who say they're like Dragonforce are literally tone deaf like metalcore fans rehashing the same crap like DT lately. Aqua is a decent Angra album recently although this smokes it. Invest your money into this awesomeness if you're not tone deaf and truly appreciate metal with a new approach. Angra has created a landmark with worldwide recognition! \m/

Temple of Shadows Poster

After almost a year of songwriting, arranging, pre-production, recording, mixing and mastering, Angra?s fifth full length studio album is finally ready. Temple Of Shadows is definitely the band?s most mature, creative and daring effort to date. It?s a refreshing record, even though the group has not given up embracing the melodic metal that has always been its trademark.

Temple Of Shadows is a concept album. Its story was created by guitarist Rafael Bittencourt and tells the saga of The Shadow Hunter, an 11th century crusader soldier who questions the Catholic Church ideals. The series of events since his first questioning to the way it affects his whole life is narrated along 13 tracks that show the band in its prime form. Several heavy metal genres and sub-genres are portrayed in the album, masterly crafted by the talents of Edu Falaschi (vocals), Kiko Loureiro (guitars), Rafael Bittencourt (guitars), Felipe Andreoli (bass) and Aquiles Priester (drums).
