Free Music Notes for Ani Difranco

Free Music Review: The first and the best
Hit: 5 Stars

I remember when you couldn't find Ani anywhere! My boyfriend had a mix tape with "Talk to Me Now" and "Out of Habit" included and I searched high and low to find her. My parents finally did after months of searching. They bought 3 of her CD's for me. This just happens to be my favorite. So raw and natural. She was only 19 I guess when she produced this CD and she was already so insightful. I remain impressed with Ani even though I no longer listen to her on a regular basis. She doesn't have much to say to me anymore, BUT, whenever I listen to this CD, I remember where I've come from and how far I've traveled since then. The two tracks I mentioned previously are the best on the CD. Her poem, "The Slant" is also excellent. How could she know all this at such an age? I miss Ani and her guitar... just the two of them piercing my heart with their sincerity and their fearlessness.

Free Music Review: Ani DiFranco's most soulful work
Hit: 5 Stars

Ever since I heard a copy of my friend's "Not a Pretty Girl" CD a few years back I have had a love-hate relationship with Ani's music. I really loved her lyrical poetry but found some of the songs very hard-core compared to the words. I have since held off buying other CDs wondering if I would have the same feeling. I just bought this CD and listened to it across the Golden Gate Bridge on a recent trip to SF. I was very impressed with the acustic style and wonderful words. Ani has a very soulful style on this album that I felt opened up to me a lot more than Not a Pretty Girl. I listen to this CD a lot now and each time I hear something new in the songs. This is definitely not background music, folks. Ani speaks for herself and now I just can't wait to hear the rest of what she has to say!

Free Music Review: Pure songwriting genius
Hit: 5 Stars

Ani DiFranco has in large part lost me over the years as she's continued to overlayer her songs with whatever styles and instruments she happens to be interested in the moment. I do admire her ability to change and progress, but I'm just not particularly interested by it.

What I'd like to see from Ani Difranco is what she gave the world on her self-titled debut CD, which is her showing off her considerable talents as a songwriter. These are beautiful, wonderful songs, showcased by just her and her guitar. "Fire Door", "Work Your Way Out", "Rush Hour"--lots of gems here. It's open, elegant, and searingly honest, and it's free of the clutter of her most recent recordings.

An absolutely essential acoustic classic.

Free Music Review: A Classic
Hit: 5 Stars

I've bought this album eight years ago. During that time my musical tastes have wandered all over the map, and my views on life have matured quite a bit as well. However, in all those years I have never grown tired of listening to Ani. My music collection has nearly a thousand albums, yet I listen to something by her nearly every day.

All of Ani's albums have a unique flavor. She's been writing for more than a decade at a rate of one or two albums per year, so you would expect her to explore many different styles. This is the album I turn to when I am in a quiet and contemplative mood. If you want to dance you might try one of her later albums, but put this one on if you want to sit and think.

Free Music Review: Amazing songwriter/musician, and only nineteen years old!
Hit: 5 Stars

It is rare in the pop world that a musician, let alone one so young, will display not only incredible musicianship, but exceptional songwriting that is not only intelligent and literarily sound, but passionate, brash, and honest. Some have compared Ani DiFranco to the likes of Alanis Morisette; on the contrary (if she deserves comparison, as she is uncomparable), her writing and singing style - gentle yet ragingly forceful - smacks more of the likes of Bob Dylan and Henry Miller. She displays pain and the reality of the world around her through hopeful, optimistic eyes in a body that still cherishes (albeit criticizes) herself, and loves life in the long run.
