Free Music Notes for Puddle DiveFree Music Review: Fun and empowerment: Hit: 5 Stars
I added this one to my Ani's collection relatively late (after Living in Clip and many others), and right now this is the Ani's album i listen to more frequently.
Simply put, there is so much fun and energy in this album, but at the same time some lyrics are very poetic, powerful and empowering, and arguments such as woman condition (a classic for Ani), religion, poverty and social inequality are treated, together with others very funny but not shallow (meaningful and casual encounters, friendship, differences in personalities and body features, etc.). The music is just as funny and energetic, there is not only Ani and her guitar here, but a bunch of other instruments: violins, drums, accordion, bass, harmonica, piano and some others appear in several songs, and make the album look like it was recorded in a summer music festival with a funny and happy atmosphere.
The tracks i love more?
Names and Dates and Times: Ani declares she's not good at remembering a person's name or when she met him/her, but she's definetely better at remembering faces. The song is simple fun, but makes you think about how similar everyone is to each other, with no difference of sex, race or social condition, and that "we are of one kind", we're all humans.
Anyday: very sweet love song.
4th of July: Ani tells the story of how she met her only friend in Iowa, a 7 years old boy, Jason, and how their friendship overcomes all the biases.
Willing to Fight: this is the definitive statement of her activity as a songwriter, very deep and emotional.
Egos Like Herdos: another funny song, mainly about the different personalities everyone has ("depending on how we slept the night before")
My IQ: this is a spoken word that, i bet, will live you breathless (at least that's what usually happens when I make my friends to listen to it for the first time). Infact, being a spoken word (but with a kinda solemn background music) makes you focus on the words, which are very important neverthless. The beginning is very funny, Ani just laughs and asks "are we taping?".
God's Country: beautiful closure to the album, again fun and deep lyrics put together to express her vision about america's "mr. holinesses".
I guess however that everyone can find his/her own favourite tracks in this gorgeous collection: fully recommended!
Free Music Review: formerly gushing fan Hit: 5 Stars
I was happy to read some of the lower reviews here, some criticism to mix it up. Any old fan can just gush on about how AWESOME there fav artist is, and certainly Ani has more than her share of fanatical followers. I was one of them; now I've moved on to more vital artists. Most real Ani fans agree that "Out of Range" is her best, most gutsy, accessible album; the best album to start with. But I like to champion "Puddle Dive", for the simple reason that it best shows off her skills as a songwriter. Listen to those lyrics-- they're about nothing! Tiny everyday insignificant moments-- getting a speeding ticket, snot, coffee, making a new friend. And yet that's the talent of a songwriter, to take those moments and make them universal and important, to fit them into the bigger picture. All these songs just seem to fit together for me, as much a real album as she's done. And its a great snapshot of her in transition. "Puddle Dive" still astonishes me at times. I haven't bought or even listened to anything since "Castles"-- she's just too prolific, and there's so much other important music out there. But her first six+ albums, all the way up to "Pretty Girl", are incredible, important stuff.
Free Music Review: *again ani surpasses my expectations...* Hit: 5 Stars
it's too bad i cant submit a six-star review because in my eyes, she definately deserves it. in this album, ani's music is more folky than pop but with the energy her contemporaries only wish they could possess. it's a definate must have for any fan who prefers ani's old style... because as far as i can tell, ani was doing just fine with herself and her lil guitar. song after song ani proves that she doesnt need an entire orchestra to get her beauty across. my personal favorites from this album would have to be god's country, pick yer nose, and fourth of july. i'm shocked at how few customer reviews of this album have been posted thus far in comparison to those for her other cds. i know many die-hard ani fans and i would have to agree with the majority of them when they declare puddle dive as the next best thing to ani's live performances. a must have for any fan... or any soon to be fan.
Free Music Review: Don't Bother Trying To Act Tame.... Hit: 5 Stars
Ok. I must admit it. I'm a fan! I can't even play it cool when it comes to Ani. She is just AMAZING! This is my favorite record simply because it shows MR Difranco at her very best. Bouncy and playful and yet also serious and emotional. Lines like..."Im not going to pretend that I dont pick my nose, thats just the way it is my friends thats just the way it goes..." will make you smile to yourself and maybe laugh. Her sheer honesty, quick wit and mellow guitar make this a perfect album for a sunday drive, or the perfect soundtrack for playing cards with friends on a warm summer nite... The track "My IQ" is a out and out poem but if you listen to the cadence and rhyme of the songs you will see that Ani is a gifted poet even when her poems are set to music. If you dig the sound of REM and the wit of Dar Williams (only I find Ani more witty) you will LOVE this album.
Free Music Review: Not a weak spot Hit: 5 Stars
I am a big Tori Amos fan to begin with, so when someone asked me if I liked Ani Difranco I said I have not heard her,so on my birth day I got a gift certifict and went to spend it, I bougt the first cd of ani I saw, And I was amazed. Ani is a lot like tori amos but without goffey whimsicl lyrics and a lot more pushy style. I like this cd more than most of her other later ones becuase of how strong the guitar part was. I also liked the way the songs very track to track, this is not one of those albums you skip around through when you listen you listen to the whole thing. One of the bes songs is number ten "used to you". Over all I would buy it if you are fan of tori and waiting for her next album (I heard 2001). another album by ani I would sugest is dilate!
