Free Music Review: ACCESSIBLE EXPERIMENTATION: Animal Collective makes the jump
Hit: 5 Stars

I have respected and loved Animal Collective's musical philosophy and experimentation. The members themselves have declared, in essence, that their music is exploration of new and different sonic territories, and that some of it works and some of it doesn't.

Having accepted that philosophy in my listening, I grew to enjoy many of A.C.'s albums, especially "Feels". However, my love for the enveloping tidal wave of their sound was renewed and multiplied when I listening to "Merriweather Post Pavilion". As I let the songs wash over me in my car, it was obvious that their vision - the goal and ambition to carve out a musical niche both accessible and representative of their symphonic and sometimes cacaphonous imagination - was fully realized in this album. I prefer listening to albums as a whole, but soon developed favorite tracks (2, 4, 9 and 11) that I would repeat over and over again.

Listen to this album in its entirety, and then listen to it again. It will make much more sense the second time.

Free Music Review: 60's revival
Hit: 5 Stars

Apparently no one told these guys good music died in the 60's cause theyre still making it. Few bands manage to write songs that take your mind on a roller coaster ride of emotions. (Off the top of my head MGMT and THE BASTARDS OF APOCALYPSE are among the few).
With their newest release ANIMAL COLLECTIVE drug u and drag u through a sunny field. The songs have a driving rythem with soft easy sounds overlaying each. The result is pleasent and happy and dizzying.

The album as a whole reminds me of MGMTs Congradualtions ablum. A different calm atmospheric take on psychadelic music.

Track 2, 3, 4 and 6 remind me very much of THE BASTARDS OF APOCALYPSE. The leading synth beats of the steady drums. With the smooth atomospheric vocals dragging you away. (As in THE BASTARDS tracks: THE SURF, CALL OF THE DEAD and WAR FAMINE CONQUEST and DEATH)

If you like either THE BASTARDS OF APOCALYPSE or MGMT you will absolutly love this album. A great buy!

Free Music Review: perfect pop album? psychedelic masterpiece?
Hit: 5 Stars

it's both and more. it gets better each time i hear it. this is the best album i have heard since person pitch.

thank you animal collective for making me truly care about new music again for the first time in years.

melodies are extremely strong and catchy. great song writing. harmonies are occasionally breathtaking. album flow is perfect. built on a bed of vintage synth tones and drum sounds that sound classic but never stale.

this may be a challenging record for people who are used to stale, boring music but it is really not that difficult. in fact it is a great POP album. this album caught me on the first listen but that is probably because i was so ensconced it that i entered a hypnagogic state. i think this album could catch anyone though. if you want to get a friend into animal collective just keep playing it around them and not telling them. eventually it will catch them and they will ask what it is.

Free Music Review: A classic
Hit: 5 Stars

Cars carrying The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett, Pere Ubu and Boards of Canada collide at an intersection and accidently exhange band members One carload stops to get stoned at Syd Barrett's house. Syd attempts to put his vinyl copy of "Endless Summer", only to discover it has melted in the sun, and fused with his copy of "Piper at the Gates of Dawn". He plays it anyway. Everyone goes in the studio next door, where the drummer passes out from too much wine and is replaced by a drum machine, calliope, and retro synths submersed in an endless ocean of reverb. Everything gets too much Digital signal processing and is slowed down by half speed, after which the Beach Boys lay down vocals.

Truely great and will be remembered as a classic. Both totally pop, and totally wierd at the same time. Track densities approach "King's Lead Hat" by Eno in some cases, and if you like textures, this is for you. Nice package too.

Free Music Review: Am I really all the things that are outside of me?
Hit: 5 Stars

This is yet another wonderful album from Animal Collective. The album is solid from start to finish, with a handful songs that are near impossible not to jump up and crazy dance to. I have found that my appreciation keeps growing for it the more I listen to it. In my opinion from Summertime clothes to Taste is the highlight of the album. Summertime Clothes is enthusiastically catchy, it captures that glorious feeling of sunbeams caressing your body on a summer day. It follows with Daily Routine, in which the transition flows excellently. It's mellow but upbeat, with some mad electronic beats. From there it rolls into Bluish, a beautiful song that is like being in an electronic underwater world.
The lyrics on Taste are exquisite. The beats have a rolling feel to it. It poses the question "am I really all the things that are outside of me?" Which I find fantastic.
