Free Music Notes for Sung TongsFree Music Review: Who could win a habit (?)
Seeming, at least to me, to be continually making good on their already good name, these native merry-landers seem to be able to out-talent the talented and out-mind your previous fave single-minded music bearers. What you have to hear here runs the gamut and the gambit, like their other releases, though maintaining a spiffy sense of cohesion--a more streamlined state, and they make a good earnest slippery push to pay homage to the pretty good and lively musics from across the worldmap and make it distinctly eerie and happy and syncopated and wacked and mellow and wild and peaceful and propulsive and make it very rad city meets county: distinctly american. Basically, no one else is doing it like this, and no one else really has 'it' enough to make me guffaw as much as i do whenever i hear a new platter of theirs... "Sung Tongs" tastes a little bit like their previous Campfire Songs outing, but this one is more pumped up and the loose ends are tied and and and carved out into nicer little forms. As for making good, they kind of take what the flaming lips could have done (instead of getting really half-baked), and they've run like crazy with it. I noticed this at the onset of the "spirit they're gone..." album: With the first track "spirit they've vanished," they took some of the squalor and damaged melodic juxtapositions of the Lips' 'Zaireeka' album and used it as a nice touchstone starting point. Now they've decided to play leapfrog all around and are doing this amorphous kind of: "we do whatever we want and we always make sure we are doing it right" kind of thang. Oh, how i embrace that m.o. This reminds me of the ethic of the Cerberus Shoal folks, and they're the only band right now that I think can match what these fine fellows are doing, as far as embracing the music of many cultures and synthesizing it (creating a synergy as well in the process) and doing so without bastardizing any of the original forms. Anyway, they are worth seeing live in any incarnation because they do what musicians should always set out to do: surprise. Tranced-out acousto-electric shambling fractured ornate pop and so on... on the first album. THEN: 'Campfire Songs' is one of my faves because its undemanding and breezy and sublime and pretty and it hints at things to come--little indian raga type melodies that slip in an out of perception--real stuff! real music!, as well as being an amazing free-sounding session. As for 'Here comes the Indian'....Well, that is the one that won me over fully and showed me that these poor white guys haven't the slightest idea of where a musical boundary would begin, nor do they care; they just want to jam out and really kick some life out of and into themselves and other respectively and backwards reciprocally respectiveless, and keep going until it is out of their systems. That album is one you can't listen to in pieces and it just kind of stupifies me: the string of stream-of-consciousness tracks, inspired, ritalin-worthy, freaky-deeky contorted wipeouts and rave-ups: THEY kind of just hit me where it matters...its got a more abstract vibe going on, but its got some angry freaked-tweaked parts and good seemless transitions into a beachyboysy number that cracks and swoops and is just unmatched really sonic-wise. that song is called 'slippi.' 'hey light' is my favorite part of the album: it morphs and careens and bashes its way out of the ambience and abstract environment and you end up somewhere you never would believe if i told you. even if i told you twice. it's ugly and graceful and noisy and then quiet and somber and haunted, and they carry a lot of weight with that. anyway, sung tongs has that whole Zaire thing going for it, folksy african-like, loping, vibrant happy tunes where the lyrics aren't so much the the point of inquiry or note. it's a kind of whole music, as in: you take in the whole of the way everything is coming and going and co-mingling and it's really satisfying in that way, and like most exceptional albums, the slower, maybe weaker moments become key points to latch onto when you get tired of the tried and true moments of real transcendence or wonder: the things you latch onto because you didn't know about them before, but they feel very right. its all very convoluted and twisted and earnest. in a good way.
