Free Music Notes for The Best Of Eric Burdon & The Animals, 1966-1968Free Music Review: You don't get gipped with this CD!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Most fans of Eric Burdon and the Animals would rate their performances from the year 1964-1966 as the best, with songs such as "House of the Rising Sun", "Boom, Boom", etc. serving as the standards by which future Animals material should be judged. However, some of the most interesting recordings took place during the time period covered on this CD, 1966-1968. During these years, the band was stretching the very boundaries of blues, adding touches of rock and psychedilia, while remaining very close to their roots. In other words, the Animals did not "sell out" during this period, but merely took blues into a new dimension. For example, the song "Help Me, Girl," sounds very much like the urban blues of Bobby "Blue" Bland, while "Hey, Gyp" could have easily been sung by Lightnin' Hopkins. (Note: You may not be familiar with the latter song by this title: Many listeners may recall a song by the Animals which seem to be titled "Buy You Chevrolet." That song was actually entitled "Hey, Gyp" and was written by Donovan, of all people. It's an absolutely fabulous song!!). In addition, Eric's version of the old Ma Rainey classic "See See Rider" is by far the best rendition of this old chestnut, while "Sky Pilot" is one of the greatest battle songs written from a soldier's perspective, and reveals both great pride and searing pain. In short, there is much to recommend this little collection, and the listener should waste no time adding it and the earlier "Best of the Animals" set to their collection!
Free Music Review: this is killer music! Hit: 5 Stars
Prior to 1970, Burdon/The Animals could do no wrong. This is Burdon leaving his soul/blues and exploring broader landscapes. Not only are the songs great, but also I love the production. It is so raw!
The best song...River Deep Mountain High. For Tina Turner, it was a dog/overblown tune. For Burden, wow! awesome.
If you are checking out this cd, you must be an Animal's fan. This rocks harder. is more raw, more experimental that the animals yet still has the animals vibe. This is a true 5 star compilation.
Free Music Review: Great Compilation Of Late-60s Eric Burdon Hit: 5 Stars
THE BEST OF ERIC BURDON & THE ANIMALS, 1966-1968 is a great collection that starts off in the Memphis-Chicago-Detroit-Great Plains blues-rock-soul vein of early Animals, and then quickly moves into psychedelia. The most compelling cut on this anthology is "Monterey", a hymn to the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, and in a way, amessage against treating anyone who doesn't fit a certain "little mold" as an outcast. This is a great anthology which any fan of classic rock should own.
Free Music Review: A Great Album! Hit: 5 Stars
Before listeniong to this all I had heard of The Animals were their earlier stuff. So I figured that I'd try something new and go for their later stuff. I'm very glad I did. This is an excellant record! Stand out tracks are, San Franciscan Nights, Sky Pilot, Good Times, Winds Of Change and When I was Young. The others are basically as good as the tracks mentioned. A fan of the 60's generation would miss out on a lot without this record.
Free Music Review: Animal 66-68 Hit: 5 Stars
This is a terrific album with a lot of great songs that are not generally available on the same album. The Animals play a wide variety of songs - some that were big hits and others that are not so well known. There is not a bad song on the album. As you would have worked out I am an Animals fan. I think House of the Rising Sun (which is not on this album) is one of the best songs of all time.
