Free Music Review: Anna Nalick is awesome!

I bought this CD when it first came out 3 years ago a loved it. This latest version has a few additional songs not on the first release. Recently I've been lucky enough to see Anna perform in person in some local clubs in Los Angeles while she's working on her next album. She is an incredible songwriter, has an incredible voice and is even better in person if you ever have the chance. I just had to get a 2nd CD to pay in my car and to have her autograph it.
In cas you've been wondering what happen to Anna in the last 3 years since her big hit "Breath", her former record company had her write and record a 2nd album, then just when it was ready to release they pulled the plug on it and Anna, just as many new artists were dropped by their record companies when the music industry crashed 1-2 years ago. Ann has had to start all over from scratch again, on her own.

This new version includes three unreleased demos as well as a new mix of the single, "Wreck of the Day".Twenty-year-old Anna Nalick is the rare artist who makes you want to grab pop music's wheels by the spokes so they'll stop spinning so fast. "Wait," the 11 songs on this debut disc say collectively to the newly initiated, "there's something substantial here." An onslaught of substance is more what it feels like, actually, and it grabs hold early. Though each of these songs is distinctive enough to avoid congealing with the others into a gorgeous glop of introspection, heavy sighs, and reflection, leadoff track and first single "Breathe (2 A.M.)" works small wonders as a flagship song. Its simple, lonely piano swirls into guitars that stop just short of rocking, allowing plenty of room for Nalick's unaffected voice to spill in. When it does, the music turns forest-thick and dreamy--influences run the Tori Amos indie singer-songwriter gamut, with streaks of Jewel and Alanis Morissette spiking out--but there's a naturalness and urgency to her singing that saves every chorus and verse from clouding over. Now that she's cautiously alighted into pop territory, sophisticated listeners will do well to dust off their welcome mats. --Tammy La Gorce
