Free Music Review: A Promising New Opera Star
Hit: 5 Stars

Anna Netrebko's opera career is only beginning. Her story reads like a rags-to-riches story. The esteemed Russian conductor Valery Gergiev found her scrubbing floors at the Kirov Opera House in her native Russia. He discovered a unique new talent. Soon, she was singing the Russian operas of Korsakov and Tchaikovsky in America. Her first starring role was in the San Francisco Opera and she made her debut at the Met in New York City in "War and Peace". Anna's good looks, winning personality, and elegant, melodic voice makes her a perfect soprano for the standard Russian repertoire. Her Rusalka, from the Dvorak opera, is among today's finest interpretations. Nevertheless, Anna has always claimed she wants "danger" in her opera career. She is taking on other opera repertoires- French lyric opera and Italian bel canto opera. Her light but dynamic voice is suited for such roles as Verdi's La Traviata (which she is soon to perform), Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor (Anna will be performing Lucia at the LA Opera in November and December) Massenet's flirtatious heroine Manon and even Mimi from Puccini's La Boheme. The arias from Lucia and Manon are on this album and showcase Anna's versatility and Russian fire. In the future, I hope to see Anna in the real showstoppers and hopefully she will preserve her voice so that she can take on the "dangerous" roles- which, being a light soprano, must mean the heavier dramatic repertoire- La Gioconda, Tosca, Madame Butterfly, Lucrezia Borgia and Norma. These operas, if Anna stars in them and sings with succcess, should exude with real theatrical firepower and will definately bring down the house. This is a great album of a promising new artist and I recommend it to any new opera singer. In particular, you will like her Lucia, Manon and Rusalka.

Free Music Review: A feast of surprises, even on familiar tunes
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm not a big opera fan -- have listened sporadically for decades. Every once in a while I newly discover a singer, or a crop of them, and that spurs me to rediscover the wonders of the repertoire. Listening to Anna Nebrebko reminds me of the experience I had when Montserrat Caballe burst on the scene, which will date me for the knowledgeable reader (who will also realize I'm 8 or 10 years behind the present wave with the present singer). This CD presents warhorses as well as some repertoire that's both a little more arcane and more challenging, all from the lyrical and/or bel canto world. Although the performances are not perfect, every moment is gorgeous, and not just the singing. It takes me hours to listen to this CD as well as her "Sempre Libera" because each excerpt is some variety of showstopper. I generally prefer another species of soprano voice (Natalie Dessay), even in the repertoire here, but for those who love a dark, dramatic, and most often very agile voice, you can't go wrong with this collection. I dismiss quibbles about her pronunciation in non-Slavic languages; her dramatic sense does not flag, at least for me, and her vowels have a musical value that merely starts with the language. I highly recommend this CD.

Free Music Review: Great Debut
Hit: 5 Stars

Those of us in the San Francisco Bay Area first met Anna Netrebko in 1995 as Lyudmilla in Glinka's Ruslan and Lyudmilla. She was in her early 20's and showed great promise as a lyric-colortura. Now, after listening to her first recital disc, I would have to say that she has the potential to be one of the great new sopranos of the 21st Century. The first thing I noticed is her distinct timbre. In an age where sopranos are a dime a dozen, her silky-dark tone is a great welcome. Her technique is excellent for the most part, sans some problems with pronouncing a few consanents here and there. The only major gripe I have with the disc is that some more aria could have been included. Supposedly, she sang Violetta at Covent Gardens to great acclaim so maybe adding Sempre Libra would have been nice. Anyway, I was fortunate enough to see her Lucia Di Lammermoor in Los Angeles last year and she pretty much brought down the house after the mad scene. Anna will be singing Musetta in San Francisco in June. Do youself a favor and check her out live if you can.

Free Music Review: a new star in the opera world
Hit: 5 Stars

I had the chance of being in St Petersbourg in June and to be present at one the performances of Traviata by Verdi conducted by Valery Gergiev. Violetta was Anna Netrebko whom I was listen to for the first time : one of the best Traviata I ever heard not only beautiful to look at young and charming but also she has a perfect intonation as well as a perfect pronounce of the Italian language . She possesses a perfect controll of the voice in the coloratura notes of the first act but though very young she can sing the last act with a very acceptable dramatic voice
I was sure I was listen to one of the best Violetta of the moment , intelligent and with a very good control of her vocal qualities , volume and colours. I wellcome this marvellous soprano

Free Music Review: Anna is an absolute 5 Stars

Gorgeous. Sexy. Pop-star charisma. And the voice of an angel...a strong one. This album was her debut seven years ago; she's done a bit of developing since then, and would now be well classified as a lyric soprano.

My favorites here were the excerpts from "Lucia" and "Manon", as well as "Musetta's Waltz". The Mozart really didn't fit. "Traviata" is her forte; ditto "La Boheme" [either soprano part]. I hope she stays away from some of the heavier stuff...Desdemona, Leonore [both], Norma. [Sleep well, Rosa; you're safe].

Anna is an opera singer with rock-star looks and drawing power...she was a work in progress seven years ago, and, really, still is. Grab this [and her duet disc with Villazon], and see what the fuss is about.
