She is now one of the most popular soprano opera singer. If you can't buy the Met ticket, this CD would be a good substitute.
Free Music Review: The Empress Has Clothes ? Hit: 3 Stars
This Pig does not know a lot about Sopranos, but if she is , why did they not record her voice more forward in the recording. The recording gives her little more presence than a back up singer. I thought all great singers sing from the diaphragm. She seems to be very throaty. I love many of the Russian arts, particularly literature (tolstoy et al ) and Shostakovich (my favorite 20th century classical composer , get the 5th and 7th ) but i will not fall for this Empress as I am not sure she has clothes. Perhaps i should.
I do like the album very much.
Free Music Review: Overly cautious and too much inhibition. Hit: 2 Stars
This acclaimed disc is a collaboration of superstars - Valery Gergiev and Anna Netrebko, Russia's two top classical artists of the era.
But the image really is much bigger than the substance.
The lining up is strange - some songs, some arias, some scenes. If what it means is to show off Netrebko's singing talent in different fields, then the resounding response must be - so-so.
Generally, the singing is recorded too backward. The sound is dark (given that the singer does not possess an overly bright timber), and the recording done in the Mariinksy Theater sounds as though taken in the mid last century.
Apart from the technical flaws, both the orchestration and the singing verge on being cold in some, and indifferent in others. While it may be true that Ms. Netrebko strives to maintain a well-balanced and overall velvety quality of singing, her top-notes sound tight, and the tone color unamimously dull-hued. The over-stressed jawline resultant from a miss-placed rear-tongue position appear to be the crux of her problem in singing. The more passionate songs in the disc are, sadly, under-done with a marked technical inhibition (or more probably, inadequacy) on the part of the singer. And she is not one bit aided by the conductor and orchestra.
Overall, bordering on dullness.
Free Music Review: Listen and forget... Hit: 2 Stars
I am no Russian fan, but enjoys music no matter from what nation.
Ms. Netrebko's new album is a decent one. Two stars for the accompaniment and the conducting. With Gegiev at hem, what would go wrong?
However, I would not hesitate to point out that the followings of this singer shows just how tremendously over-rated she is.
There is no distinctive song in this album. Lyrical, yes. But the voice is dark - unless you happen to love darker voices for such lyrical tunes.
Apart from the overall lyricism, nothing manages to strike the heart in depth.
It would do heavens for a cross-over album, beautifully bound by first rate accompaniment with a real maestro conducting. But definitely NOT for serious listening.
To make myself clearer, my impression of Ms. Netrebko's voice is (1) dark; (2) cool and (3) monochromatic. If that suits Russian repertoire, then I would not have any thing further to comment. But I do find other Russian singers to have much more shades in their voices, more 'spheric' so to speak, and with much more ardour.
