Free Music Review: You can bet your bottom dollar...
Hit: 5 Stars

...that you want to buy this recording! Annie is without doubt one of the most well known broadway musicals of all time. This is due in great part to the well known film version and it's popularity among amateur theater groups. It is timeless and will live forever, but to truly appreciate its unique charm it is important not to underestimate it; this is not just an engaging rags to riches story about a red haired orphan, it has a deeper political and social message and is possibly the most optimistic musical ever written. I wont insult the reader's intelligence by saying more on this subject, but i will heartily reccomend the immediate purchase of this recording; dont worry if it fails to captivate on the first listen, i guarentee that you will not be able to stop playing it after a while! The music is extremely addictive-beware of songs like Easy Street and Tomorrow, they get stuck in your head forever. The lyrics are delightful; they are at times beautiful, at times sarcastic, at times hilarious and always fun. The performers on the OBCR are excellent, particularily Andrea McArdle who is quite possibly the best child performer i have ever heard, and i know many musicals featuring children. Some of my favorite songs are Maybe, We'd like to thank you Herbert Hoover, and NYC, but there is not one song on the recording which is not enjoyable and the early practice tapes are also interesting. The booklet features some interesting pictures and good background information;in short this is almost the ideal cast recording.

My high school recently performed Annie, and I was cast in the role of Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks. When I found out what part I got, I went out and purchased all three of the available Annie soundtracks and cast albums. I bought the soundtrack from the 1982 movie, the 1999 movie, and the 1977 original Broadway cast CDs. I have closely listened to all of them and here is what I think.

If you can't decide which one to pick from chose, the original Broadway cast. On this CD you get all of the songs from the musical plus many you get cut songs. The only thing about the cut songs is Martin Charnin, who is the lyricist, does not have a very good voice. Now, if you absolutely love either movie version, I suggest you go with them even though they don't have all of the songs from the musical. The 1982 soundtrack is horrible. That one leaves many songs out.

Andrea McArdle is a wonderful Annie. Her "Tomorrow" is very moving. Reid Shelton, I think, is the best "Daddy" Warbucks. Albert Finney, who was in the 1982 movie, is second, and Victor Garber, who was in the 1999 movie, is last. Reid Shelton has the perfect voice, commanding when it needs to be and soft when it needs to be soft. If you like Carol Burnett in the 1982 movie then you will love Dorothy Loundon on this CD! Please buy this CD! You won't regret it!

Free Music Review: Still Great! After All These Years!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I believe it was 1978 when my parents bought me the original broadway cast recording of Annie on vinyl. It was my favorite record of my childhood and now I'm grateful to be able to have it on CD and play it for my daughter. And while not everyone may appreciate it...I'll admit I got a big misty when I heard the first public performance of Tomorrow (track 27). While it horrifies me to think that there are people out there that truly believe Aileen Quinn was a better Annie than Andrea McArdle, it's nothing new to me either. My parents took me to see Annie on Broadway at the Alvin Theater in NYC for my 7th birthday (Allison Smith was in the role at the time) and shortly after that, the movie debuted. Those I knew who had seen it on Broadway and knew what everything was supposed to sound like (and knew the storyline of the musical) were incredibly disappointed with the movie...while those who only had the movie as their reference liked (in some cases loved) it. I guess if you're a bigger fan of the movie, mabye the musical soundtrack is not for you- BUT please be aware that the creators of Annie intended to have this sound the way you hear it on this Broadway soundtrack. I recommend this to any true Annie fan out there (and now my old vinyl album can just rest in a safe place- since it's already been very well loved).

Free Music Review: The Best Ever
Hit: 5 Stars

I fell in love with this musical 22 years ago when I was visiting Washington D.C. with my 4 sisters and mother. I was 7 and the youngest of 7 kids, and my oldest sister lived in Washington and was very "cultured". SO she thought it would be a great thing to bring me to see Annie at the National Theatre. People always say that you don't really remember things until you are like 10 years old. But seeing that play, I remember all the background props, the smell of the theatre and especially the way the songs were sung. It was the best experience of my life and I'm just hoping that I will be able to give my daughter the same kind of experience. I still have the original Soundtrack record from that play, with all the pictures on the inside of the case, and the whole story summarized on it. I have bought both of the VHS tapes that came out for my daughter, which she loves also, but I think that she needs to actually see it on stage to appreciate it as I have(she is 6 1/2). Watching it on TV just is not the same. So my rating for the CD is THUMBS UP ALL THE WAY.

Free Music Review: My Personal Favorite!
Hit: 5 Stars

From the time I first saw this show in community theater when I was seven, I have been in love with it. It may seem silly to say, but it spawned my interest in theater, musicals, and history! This is a musical that can bring a smile to the faces of the most bitter people. Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin outdid themselves with the charasmatic music and lyrics. "Tommorrow" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and was actually the last song from a Broadway show to become a standard. The cast is lead with great passion by Andrea McArdle as the title character, Dorothy Loudon as a delightfully wicked Miss Hannigan, Reid Shelton as Warbucks, orphans that aren't sappy (a great achievment), and a quality ensemble (listen for Laurie Beechmen as "The Star to Be" during the "NYC" number). Annie was the first CD I ever owned, and i've listened to it hundreds of times. Take it from me: It's a keeper!
