Great deal for my children. they love it and it was so much cheaper than at the show.
Free Music Review: Strouse, Si! Charnin, No! Hit: 4 Stars
I don't know what the one-star reviewer means by the "limited musical talents" of Charles Strouse. There are few Broadway composers left alive who have demonstrated greater melodic gifts or versatility than Strouse. The music for "Annie" is among the best things Strouse has ever done; consistently tuneful, lively, and striking a nice balance between '70s pop and '30s pastiche. The problem with this score--and with the show as a whole, since the book seems fairly solid--is the lyrics of Martin Charnin, evidently a very likeable person, so likeable that his collaborators (including, not once but twice, Richard Rodgers) don't seem to notice that he is at best mediocre and at worst downright bad. He seems incapable of stating things in a fresh or interesting way, his rhymes are often incompetent ("Christmas" and "dismiss"), and he doesn't even make sure always to fit his words to the music in a proper fashion. The performance is excellent, the remastered sound is fine, and the CD is worth hearing for Strouse's music--but one can't help wishing there were better words attached to that music. There are some bonus tracks of Charnin and Strouse performing some songs that weren't used; they're all pretty terrible, though one of them ("We Got Annie") was reinstated for the awful movie version.
Free Music Review: andrea mcardle shines Hit: 4 Stars
I've been a huge fan of Annie since I was little and first saw the 1982 film(not the best version of the musical but it introduced me to the wonders of the musical) at around the ages of 4-6. Since then, I've grown out a bit in my collection. I own two versions of the 1982 film on vhs, the new disney version, and both the obc recording(this cd i'm reviewing here) and the disney version of the soundtracks. Annie is a musical you can't help but love. From Tomorrow to Easy Street, it's oozing with a story any young girl can relate to, even if you aren't an orphan. The love Annie shows for wanting a family is touching and the songs are beautiful and well done by an incredible cast. Don't buy the soundtrack to the 1982 film unless you want to be confused, buy this one and learn the magic of Annie.
Free Music Review: Excuse me, but I am NOT an idiot...! Hit: 4 Stars
I feel quite sorry for the person who wrote the 'review' that was basically a diatribe against Charles Strouse. Who are you, his ex-wife or something? I, for one, don't appreciate being called an idiot. As a person with a higher-than-average IQ who enjoys a wide variety of entertainment, I find the music and story of this play to be sweet and charming. I admit that I have a sentimental attachment because it was the first stage play I ever saw 20-some years ago, but listening to it again does not diminish the qualities I loved about it when I was 14. I would urge folks to take this soundtrack in the spirit in which it was intended -- as a musical that brings an old-time comic strip to life. In my opinion, the result is quite enjoyable.
Free Music Review: Tomorrow Is Always A Better Day Hit: 4 Stars
This musical will always be one of my favorites of all time- and it's no wonder that it played to sold out houses when it premiered on Broadway. Annie is a charming musical that is sure to make you smile everytime you listen to "Tomorrow." When I left the show, I felt a little better about my life and more optismistic about to Tomorrow. But who, can't love Annie? The kids are joyous, the story is brillantly done, and the music is cathcy. It's a musical that adults will of course, want to take the kiddies too but, as soon as you leave you too will be singing "Tomorrow" as well. All in all you must buy this C.D. it will make you smile with each listen! And remember Tomorrow is always a day away-
