Free Music Review: Songs of Soul and Emotions
Hit: 5 Stars

It is certainly heartening to know that any day Annie Lennox decides to step into the recording studio, she'll be able to delight her fans and the world with her words and melody.

Dark Road opens with its sunken melancholy before breaking into a rapturous bridge then closing with the quiet calm it began with. Such is a display of the multitudes of emotion Lennox is capable of packing in. On songs like Womankind and the archetypical anti-HIV/AIDS tribute, Lennox attempts to sing about female empowerment and knowledge, resulting in two gorgeous anthems. The latter, ambitiously includes the backing vocals of 23 female artists and a resounding sign-off that features a short African interlude. On other tracks (Big Sky, Lost), Lennox touches on love, loss, and hurt like no one else ever knew.

At her most experimental, Lennox shows her mastery. Through the Glass Darkly (probably inspired by Jostein Gaarder)begins like a piece of Zero 7 while Coloured Bedspread is a damn fine electronic synth track destined for the clubs.

Of course, Lennox's deep haunting voice is never compromised throughout the album.

If there's one album (along with Feist's The Reminder and Radiohead's In Rainbow) you have to listen to in 2007, Songs of Mass Destruction is the one that serves to add some soul into music. (A)

Free Music Review: Songs of Mass Beauty
Hit: 5 Stars

I've always loved the Eurythmics, and I really love "Walking on Broken Glass," but I was never a fan of her solo albums as a whole. Until now. I was interested in the new album as first because of the title. So I checked out the samples on Itunes, and the songs "Dark Road" and "Love Is Blind" sounded interesting to me; a very nice sound with nice vocals. I took a chance and bought the whole album, and I'm glad I did.

These songs are the strongest she's ever done, in my opinion. The samples don't do the songs justice. There is a beautiful bridge in that song that really adds a punch to an already powerful message. "Love is Blind" reminds me of the "Be Yourself Tonight" era, but nicely updated for the 21st century. I don't want to go song by song here because Songs of Mass Destruction has to be listened to as a whole, which is a nice thing in an age of singles-only CDs. I will mention one track. "Through the Glass Darkly" is Annie's best vocal on the album. It sends chills down my spine every time I hear it.

It was very wise that Annie worked with producer Glenn Ballard (Alanis Morrisette) because he adds a great pop sensibility to what I think is a deeply personal album. I highly recommend this album. Just pop it on and take the full ride.

Free Music Review: This is brilliant!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have been a die-hard Annie Lennox fan since her early days as one half of the Eurythmics. Since she went solo, I've loved all of her albums and Songs of Mass Destruction is no different.

All of the songs on this album are powerful and emotive and really force me to confront my inner feelings. The song Dark Road is one of the most brilliant songs ever written. Even the uptempo songs have more depth than usual pop ditty we hear on the waves. The dark cloud that hangs over this album is that Annie was dropped by her record label shortly after its release due to poor first week sales. What a shame that we still have to measure the "success" of this album based on its commercial appeal.

Nonetheless, I want to congratulate Annie on a powerful album that resonates with me on every level. Some reviewers have complained that the wait between her albums is too long. Can anyone on here honestly say that the wait hasn't been worth it? She "cooks" each of her albums to perfection and I'll wait for her next release (on a different label) for as long as it takes.

Free Music Review: An Artist's Artist for the Ages who marches to her own drummer!
Hit: 5 Stars

I can see where some reviewers on here would judge this CD harshly...they are expecting Annie to churn out the same thing over and over just to satisfy them when she has always put out albums that reflect her own vision to satisfy her own creativity, not to satisfy fans or people who expect another Bare(you know who you are), Diva, Sweet Dreams, or Here Comes the Rain Again. Those days are gone, people, get over it. Ms. Lennox has put out another fine effort that showcases fine production, song writing, and of course her fabulous voice that seems to get better with each CD, if that's even possible. I just listened to it for the first time and actually my favorite is Dark Road, but I'm sure as I keep listening to it closer new favorites will emerge. Annie is never going to please everybody, and she never will, but those of us who appreciate a true artist who writes her own lyrics and music and performs it beautifully every time and doesn't listen to critics, record execs or whining fans gets my love and respect every time! You go, Diva!

Free Music Review: Crushed any competitors to Smithereens!
Hit: 5 Stars

I was just begining to find out who Annie Lennox was around the time "Songs" was coming out, i had seen a snippet of the "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) music video on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 80's and i immediatley had to know everything about this artist. I did my research just in time to see that she had just recentley released a Brand Spankin New Cd entitled "Songs Of Mass Destruction". Well with a name like that, WHO can resist? so i bought the cd and BOY WAS I GLAD!

SOMD is a collection of wonderfully crafted semi-dark ballads that are borderlining sheer perfection. Annie's voice is so pure and heartfelt. Your body feels every note she sings.

MY Top 5 are
1.Big Sky
2.Smithereens
3.Dark road
4.Lost
5.Love Is Blind

Songs of Mass Destruction is a must for every age. don't try to resist it.
You Know you WANT TO. SO BUYITNOW!

LOVE YOU ANNIE!
