Free Music Notes for Another AnimalFree Music Review: classic sound Hit: 3 StarsDespite the fact Another Animal is comprised of members of Godsmack and Ugly Kid Joe, the group manages to create a classic sound all their own that falls somewhere between Alice in Chains and Soundgarden.
Free Music Review: Very Good! Hit: 4 StarsThis is one of the top releases of 2007, I like it better then the last couple of Godsmack CD's. It's been said that some of these songs were leftover Godsmack songs that didn't quite measure up to their standards, but they are just a little different and work well here. Since Godsmack started out as an Alice in Chains tribute band it's no surprise that some of these songs sound like AIC. The one song that doesn't belong here is the Blues jam they try.
Free Music Review: Another Animal 2007 = Alice In Chains 1995 Hit: 5 StarsThis is one fine album from the former singer of Ugly Kid Joe..Whit Crane with the members from Godsmack. The drummer, Shannon Larkin of Another Animal originally drummed for Wrathchild America/Souls At Zero some 10-15 years back. Whit Crane and Shannon Larkin (great friends of each other) regroup here since Ugly Kid Joe's 1996 album Motel California. I first found about this self-titled debut album on MySpace.com and was immediately hooked. From first hearing Another Animal I though of Alice In Chains self-titled 1995 epic album. In fact both albums totally remind me of each other (Another Animal 2007 + Alice In Chains 1995). Both albums have funky animals on their covers/throughout the albums, both are self titled, different band members sing respectively on both albums, and the over all sound of the bands. Godsmack has always sounded as a Alice In Chains band. But Another Animal totally reminds me of Alice In Chains which is cool as hell. Another Animal definitely has that Seattle grunge/metal sound and Whit Crane and the bandmates of Another Animal belt out great songs on this self titled album. Broken Again an awesome song on here is to me the centerpiece of the album. Every song on here rocks out and brings out Another Animal in these guys. Get it now.
Free Music Review: another animal Hit: 3 StarsOf couse you can hear the Godsmack influence in sound with so many members playing, but over all not a bad disc. Being a fan of early heavy metal it's hard to find something new to satisfy. At least this disc has an edge to it.
Free Music Review: Another merging mix of musicians...does it work? Hit: 3 StarsUpon hearing the single "Broken Again" for several weeks on end, I was eager to find out who was behind it, and upon hearing the band was called "Another Animal" and featured members from Godsmack behind the vocalist Whitfield Crane (Ugly Kid Joe) I was excited to purchase this debut album.
Nowadays there are many mergings that have been successful, with the likes of the 3 album stint of Audioslave (ex-Soundgarden/Rage Against the Machine) and current rockers Velvet Revolver (Stone Temple Pilots/Guns and Roses) just to name a few. Most people think of Whitfield Crane and associate him with the popular singles from Ugly Kid Joe's "America's least wanted" album, but he in fact has a great range that was also seen some with the band "Life of Agony" for a short time, as well as some grunge rock appeal on the final Ugly Kid Joe album.
The vocals aren't the issue I have with this band, it is the fact it isn't really anything groundbreaking or special, but to expect the next "big thing" would be getting high hopes. Despite loving a lot of Godsmack's music, I am surprised that anyone would think they would find "similar" godsmack sounds here. There are some riffs on the second song called "Distant Signs" that sound somewhat like parts of Velvet Revolver and Chevelle, with backing vocals that are pretty good despite my mediocre interest in this song. The song "Broken Again" is every bit a nice alt rock song that shows a lot of reflection within the lyrics. Crane's a great singer that has a distinct voice and this song really brings that out.
At times some songs have a Southern rock style to them, but don't think I mean Lynyrd Skynyrd, for it still is fresh enough to rock and appeal to someone that likes modern FM Radio bands. The song "Amends" has a lot of attitude and the one following it aptly called "Interlude" is a nice, timeless acoustic with a great drumbeat. The latter half of the track listing is more of the same, with Crane crooning away, backed by basic guitar licks and songs that are simple and safe. If you are a fan of Whitfield Crane this is an album you should definitely consider, since Whit hasn't appeared on anything for a while now. If you think you are stumbling upon the second coming of rock and roll, or even the same success story of bands like Audioslave or A Perfect Circle, you might be disappointed. Fans of bands like Theory of a Deadman may find enough here for repeated listens as well.
