Free Music Review: More amazing experiences

Here is Volume Two in Guy Marc Hinant's exploration into mostly unknown territory (unknown because most of it hasn't been released before).
Incantation For Tape: *****
What a fantastic way to start this set. This is what happens when you're truly inspired. Strange and exotic, this track just kicks ass.
Visage V: ****
I LOVE the sounds on this, but at ten minutes, it starts to belabor the point. But when you're in the mood for it, nothing else will do. Sounds like a vacuum cleaner in hell.
Aerial>Song: *****
This guy studied philosophy and art, and then went to do sounds for animated fare, including Mr. Magoo and Ralph Bakshi's early films. Apparently, he did some amazing work in the sixties, but they didn't put any of that on here. Instead, we get a very recent piece that may be completely lost through inferior speakers, but with a good system (and/or headphones), it is utterly hypnotic.
Music Of The Spheres: ****
This one had to grow on me, but grow on me it did. After a brief introduction, it proceeds to build up a series of formal atonal lines.
Mandolin: ***
This is Morton Subotnick, but it's a sound sculpure as opposed to the synthesizer work most people associate him with. This one is growing on me too...
Four Aspects: ****
Another fine study in sound manipulation.
Emily: ****
A spooky way to reframe a couple of telephone conversations.
Quintet: *
I cannot get into this one. Too abrasive, which may be the point, but it grates on my nerves too much, especially at 12 minutes. You can't win them all.
Space Travel w/ Changing Choral Textures: ***
It doesn't go anywhere, but it is a cool noise from the guy who did a lot of the sound work for David Lynch's early movies. Reminds me a lot of Eraserhead's sound.
Zephirum Scan: ***
More cool sounds.
Bronchus One.1: *****
This piece was done before Autechre's first official release, and did not see the light of day until dug up for the anthology. Very very cool. These guys obviously knew what they wanted to do when they first started.
On/Off Edit: *****
Also very cool. This one was put together by Yoshihiro Hanno (who is as much Multiphonic Ensemble as Trent Reznor is Nine Inch Nails). He has worked with both Mick Karn and Ryuichi Sakamoto, which gives him a lot of cred in my eyes. This is another in the same vein as the DJ Spooky track on the first anthology, but with a much more relaxed atmosphere.
Torture - Bodyparts: **
It's a cool concept, but brutal in both tone and spoken content. I don't immerse myself in this track very much.
Purzuit Ov Noize: *
It may be a skilled piece of work, but it doesn't hold anything for me. Too loud and abrasive.
Pulp: ***
This is also loud, but holds more interest for me. The expressionism is well done, and I can get into the mood for it once in a while.
Lathe: *****
Arcane Device is pretty much the work of one individual, one David Lee Myers. A nice study on the effects of two sounds put together in a very atmospheric way.
Industrial Ambients: *
Another one that just fails to convince me. Of course, my review should be taken with a huge grain of salt: any review of material of this nature is going to be massively subjective. But this one, at ten minutes, comes across to me as so much sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Slogun: *
Another one that I skip. Guy sure does like the abrasive stuff...
Free Music #1 (For Four Theramins): ****
This is more like it. Theramins are the cool instruments you hear on early sci-fi soundtracks (most notably in Forbidden Planet). Percy Grainger, of all people, put this one together, and it's fun.
Imagination: ****
Ah, Sun Ra. This is only a short segment, but a well-chosen one. More free-form improv jazz than a noise or electronic composition, but fun to have.
She's Too Much For My Mirror / My Human Gets Me Blues: ***
This is okay. For me, it falls more into the free-form improv jazz category than true noise or electronic music, but what the hey.
Again, a superb job by Guy to provide us with unusual experiences, most of which are unatainable except through these anthologies. This one is one of my favorites.
