Free Music Review: Nobody liked it, but the audiences

The original reviews of this production were almost unanimously negative. "Third rate commerce masquerading as art." "The facade of freshness, greasepaint smeared on the wrong face." "The name of 'Greasepaint's' game is Banality."
But this did not keep it from running 233 performances and making a profit for its investors. Probably Norman Nadel was right when he called it "a triumph of showmanship over material."
In retrospect, we cannot quibble with the songs. Newley and Bricusse have compiled an exceptional display--"A Wonderful Day Like Today," "My First Love Song," "Who Can I Turn To?"
The unsung hero of the piece is Gilbert Price, whose star quality was never recognized. I first "met" him in his occasional appearances on late night television in the mid '60s--on the Joey Bishop show, if I am remembering correctly. Sadly for us today, this (as far as I am aware) is the only recorded legacy of this exceptional perfomer. Sadly, as well, the mid '60's did not offer many opporunities to such talented African-Americans.
If you find Broadway musicals entertaining, you will enjoy this recording. Forget about trying to understand the story. Just savor the music.
