Anthony Newley Collection
Newley was a creative, innovative singer/writer/director of the '60s and '70s, in the tradition of British music halls. He was a versatile and talented singer whose cabaret-style evenings were very popular with his fans and those who admired stylish singing and comedy. He became known to most American's through his two hit Broadway shows, "The Roar of the Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd" and "Stop The World I Want to Get Off." His shows had a few hit songs (e.g, "What Kind of Fool Am I," still sung by many artists) but also contained subtle (sometimes, "in your face"!)social messages on class, war, and personal identity. The end of the first act of "Roar" ends with the now-classic, ""Who Can I Turn To?" with Newley alone downstage center, in the ever-decreasing glare of a single spotlight. It was a very powerful moment.
The album itself is a mixture of his many styles--ballads, show songs, lighter fare. It's technically very good and for one who enjoys Newley a necessary part of the library.
